[P] The lighting, animation system, physics, and track design are unique to RT because of its bespoke engine. Just as its aesthetic, presentation, and personality are. I mean, most wouldn't care because homogeneous gamers wouldn't find homogeneous games objectionable. Clearly that's true, with the years of GaaSsy-sludge they devoured so readily. But I value devs that show this care for their projects. Those that avoid being "Just another..."

[P] It's why I couldn't get on with CW, even as a SEGA fan. I mean, better than Mario Kart World? Low bar. Better than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? Almost identical, because that's what CW is trying to be. CW just looks, feels, and plays like Mario Kart in UE5. It's good, but not what I want. I want a gamw that has its own identity, and the look, feel, and play or RT are sublimely unique. It's a singular hybrid of arcade and kart in every way.

[P] I'm not picking on SEGA, here. Huge fan. I, in fact, believe CrossWorlds is one of the better efforts to hide its UE5-ness. But if CrossWorlds is set side-by-side with Racing Transformed (which usea a bespoke engine)? "Ywp, CW looks like UE5." The way movement is conveyed, the animations, how textures load in, the handling of LOD, and so on. They all have UE5-ness about them. As does the post-processing (shaders and all). It's very obvious.

[P] The thing is? Unity and UE5 games really do look all alike. Why? The engine informs a lot about a game's aesthetic. Even if one struggles against it, there are visual -isms of UE5 and Unity aplenty. Those engines are designed that way. You aren't making a game, you're making a UE5 game, just like every other UE5 game. For examplw: Compare CrossWorlds with Racing Transformed CW still looks notablyUE5-ish despite SEGA's best efforts.

[P] "What am I looking at?? This isn't UE5 or Unity! This is on par with sixth gen games!" It wasn't UE5 or Unity, it was indeed bespoke! The Mist engine, they're calling it. I haven't felt so refreshed by game footage in a long while, I have a modicum of hype for this. I'm so often let down by modern games, I don't feel especially blown away by anything. Nexomon 3, though... There is worth in avoiding Unity & UE5 if you want your game to really pop.

[P] It strikes me how many modern games lack aesthetic personality and performance, it really drives home the worth of avoiding Unity/UE5. Using a bespoke engine or Godot—which can be retooled into something bespoke as it's modular and open source—makes all the difference in the world. I'm currently 1:1 at spotting Unity/UE5 games. I never fall because they're so utterly homogeneous. Nexomon 3 bowled me over when I first laid eyes on it.

I've been a Pokémon fan all my life. It's been the ultimate mixed bag, but I'm still quite fond of it. After finishing and enjoying Legends Z-A, I was still feeling the itch for another monster-catching RPG, so I decided to give Nexomon a try. I remembered people praising it and its sequel a few years back, so I went in feeling excited.
I'm starting to think I hate this game.

I've been a Pokémon fan all my life. It's been the ultimate mixed bag, but I'm still quite fond of it. After finishing and enjoying Legends Z-A, I was still feeling the itch for another monster-catching RPG, so I decided to give Nexomon a try. I remembered people praising it and its sequel a few years back, so I went in feeling excited.
I'm starting to think I hate this game.

It is really funny that I run a Telegram chat just for the discussion of #Pokemon (as well as #Digimon #Palworld #Nexomon and other clones) considering I've never watched beyond like the first season of the anime and never played beyond the first three generations of games and have only read a little bit of the manga. I do love talkin the original 151 at any point of the day though and still play the first two generations all the time.

And now that I've suddenly become much more of a gamer in my 30s, its reached into this hobby too.
