This morning I came across a list of things that the poet Kenneth Koch said in the Modern Poetry classes I took with him twenty years ago. I wrote down anything he said that grabbed me--frequently witty, profound, playful, irreverent--a view of the world that won't come around again. I didn't expect to be floored by it twenty years later.
Part 1 - About Walt Whitman, specifically "Song of Myself":
Child: Where is Uncle Walt?
Koch: He's in the backyard looking at grass again.--
"Let's get undisguised!" You want to run away from anyone who says that!

It's a great loss when you think about it--when you stand up you don't have a lap.

Nobody would want to be in a room with someone who talks like this. (About part 12 of "Song of Myself").

Whitman: I don't just love the horse, I AM the horse.

Child: Where's Uncle Walt?

Being a good poet is like being a Cleveland poet.

Lower your grades slightly to understand where you really are. You'll all get decent grades. You're spoiled, privileged students at an Ivy League school that suffers from grade inflation. In the old days we had to walk barefoot, from Brooklyn.
