“Food, culture, people, and landscape are all absolutely inseparable”*…
Further, in a fashion, to yesterday’s post: Stephen Lurie and our friends at The Pudding with an elegant and insightful looks at what America’s earliest restaurants can teach us about America…
The New York Public Library’s Buttolph Collection of menus, dated 1880-1920, captures the emergence of modern restaurant dining…
… A menu describes what a reataurant serves– but a menu also describes who is being served. [Collectively] they refect the class, gender, political, technological, and environmental shifts of history.
The thousands of menus in this collection document a period of fundamental transformation– and the birth of the society and the restaurant we know today.
I’ve searched through the archive to tell you that story in ten dishes. Your table is ready– right this way…
Restaurant dining in America was once an Imitation: wannabe aristocrats attempting French feasting. But as the 19th became the 20th century, the American middle class and the true American resaturant emerged: diverse, accessible, opinionated… and at times, chaotic.
From Bisque d’Ecrevisses and Celery in a Crystal Celery Vase through “cosmopolitan” and “ethnic” food to Potatoes O’Brien Au Gratin and Baked Alaska, the tasty (and illuminating) tale of dining out in America: “A History of Menus is a Menu of History,” from @luriethereal.bsky.social and @pudding.cool.

As we dig in, we might send tasty birthday greetings to a man who has built a culinary domain that epitomizes (in its scale, at least one huge quadrant of) the current state of the restaurant business: Wolfgang Puck; he was born on this date in 1949. He made his name with Spago restaurant in Los Angeles in 1982. He now has more than 20 fine dining restaurants and dozens of pizza bars, bistros, cafes, airport restaurants, express outlets, catering services, cultural center cafes; he sells gourmet foods, cookware, and appliances; and he runs a catering empire (that has catered he official Academy Awards Governors Ball every year since 1994).

Budget för bibliotek säkrad i New York
Bild: Zohran Mamdani på en antifascistisk manifestation i New York i oktober 2024. Foto: Bingjiefu He, CC BY-SA 4.0.
Ekonomiskt otrygga bibliotek

Good morning. It’s Thursday. Today we’ll find out why the New York Public Library is giving away books — and providing no-waiting access to 25 e-book titles. We’ll also look at the relationship between Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and the police commissioner, Jessica Tisch.
Credit…Karsten Moran for The New York Times.Usually you have to return books you get from a library. Today the New York Public Library will give books away — 1,000 books from its list of the best titles of 2025, chosen by more than 80 librarians from branches across the library’s system. If you get one, you won’t have to return it.
The giveaways are a way to promote the library’s best-books list. They will be available at three “flagship” libraries — the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library, at 455 Fifth Avenue; the Bronx Library Center, at 310 East Kingsbridge Road; and the St. George Library Center, at 5 Central Avenue on Staten Island.
But giving away books is not the only way the library is attempting to put the titles on its list in readers’ hands. The institution is making 25 of the titles available as e-books with no waiting to anyone who has one of its library cards. Ten of the 25 are for adults, five are for teens and 10 are for children (five in English and five in Spanish).
“Usually when we announce our best books, there’s a run on the titles, no matter how many we buy” to put on the shelves, said Brian Bannon, the chief librarian, “so it’s sort of like you can’t check out the ones you want until next summer.” With e-books, “we’re leaning into a way that makes it easy to borrow a book” — and to read it while the impulse is fresh.

Celebrate National Library Shelfie Day 2025
Let’s Celebrate Libraries!
National Library Shelfie Day occurs annually on the fourth Wednesday in January. It is a great opportunity for people to reflect on the books that have influenced their lives and inspire others to engage with reading and explore the wealth of resources available at libraries.
Founded in 2014 by the New York Public Library, this event encourages us to take and share selfies. The catch is that this isn’t just any selfie; it’s a “shelfie,” which is a picture of yourself in front of a bookshelf at the library! It is an invitation to showcase our love for reading and recognize the importance of libraries. This fun initiative promotes literacy and also highlights the unique experiences and memories created within library spaces.
Whether you’re visiting your local library or showcasing your home collection, participating in National Library Shelfie Day is a creative way to inspire others to celebrate reading and explore the wealth of resources available libraries.
Libraries are essential!!
Libraries are a safe space for community engagement, promoting literacy and support for lifelong learning. Libraries provide free access to a vast array of information resources, including books, journals, newspapers, and digital content, enabling individuals to acquire knowledge and stay informed. Libraries safeguard and preserve our stories for those who come after us.
“When I got my library card, that was when my life began.”

"…#museums and other #CulturalInstitutions, including some very, very big ones, to my eye they’re reluctant to use their #influence.
The #NewYorkPublicLibrary probably could be doing a lot more to support digital rights around #eBooks, for example. Or they could be releasing a lot of the books as eBooks and saying, we own the book, we can release it as an eBook. They don’t want to do that because they don’t want to antagonize the #publishers right now."

"Led by suffragist and public librarian Maud Malone, [the Library Employee's Union (LEU) of the New York Public Library] was the first of five American Federation of Labor affiliates to emerge at large east coast libraries. Though they disbanded by the end of the 1920s, the LEU instigated spirited debates about unionization across the field of American librarianship."
