"Theme from New York, New York" (often abbreviated to "New York, New York") is the #themeSong from the #MartinScorsese musical film #NewYorkNewYork (1977), composed by #JohnKander, with lyrics by #FredEbb. #LizaMinnelli performs the song during the finale of the film. It was nominated for the #GoldenGlobeAwardForBestOriginalSong. Two years later, #FrankSinatra covered the song, and it became closely identified with both him and #NewYorkCity.

New York, New York — a helluva town,
The Bronx is up, but the Battery’s down,
The people ride in a hole in the ground:

@culturednyc Lionel Stander also used that voice to stand up for democracy during the McCarthy era. From his #NYT obituary, under questioning by #HUAC, “Mr. Stander lectured the committee on democracy and due process of law and refused to repeat under oath his former frequent denials that he had ever been a Communist.” He was blacklisted in Hollywood for 24 years. BTW, he has a great late-career role in #NewYorkNewYork. https://www.nytimes.com/1994/12/02/obituaries/lionel-stander-dies-at-86-actor-who-defied-blacklist.html?unlocked_article_code=1.fVA.2IVs.0hF7TR07nACV&smid=url-share

Sorry, ‘Star Wars’ — with ‘New York, New York,’ Martin Scorsese Made the Best Movie of 1977

So, this happened, after Trump decided congestion pricing in New York City was a bother to rich people. You know, the ones who can't abide travelling with the proletariat on public transport. He ordered the dismissal of a local government regulation. Not smart, but then Trump could never be accused of having intelligence. Rat cunning, sure, but not genuine intelligence.

Anna Uzele -- “But the World Goes ‘Round”
This a wonderful rendering of a favourite song of mine. As a YouTube commenter points out, Anna Uzele doesn't just mimic Liza Minnelli but instead makes the song her own.

Occasionally, I give Scorsese’s New York New York another try and this long first scene in the nightclub quickly turns me off. There’s no tone, no chemistry, no reason to continue watching. Blah!

I knew Scorcese's "New York, New York" wasn't thought of as one of his best movies, but I did not know it was 3 hours long. It has good parts, (and Liza Minelli's performance,) but doesn't really hold together as a whole. I also dunno if Bob De Niro was right, or believable, in the role as an abusive philandering musician, though nice to see him pretending to play a vintage Conn tenor, instead of the usual Selmer...

#Broadway musical #NewYorkNewYork has announced its sudden closure on July 30. Despite nine Tony Award nominations and one win for Best Scenic Design, unfavorable reviews have kept audiences away with the show at about 70% capacity. The musical was based on the 1977 movie of the same name directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli.
