I started reading Lu Xun to understand China and his times; I continued reading Lu Xun to understand our world and our times.
I've been going through the Penguin "The Real Story of Ah-Q and Other Tales of China: The Complete Fiction of Lu Xun " . Some of his stories will stay with me for the rest of my life. For example, "New Year's Sacrifice" with its depiction of the cruelties of social hierarchy, the repression of women, and suffocating superstition will disabuse honest readers of any sentimental illusions they entertain about the virtues of traditional society. More subtly, the narrative also reminds progressives that they might not have all the answers.
