We're coming into the final stretch of 2025. And I thought I'd share some new words that I have learned this year. Now they may not be new you all young, hip, jive crazy cool cats, but they're new to me, and if they're new to you as well, then you'll learn them in much the same way that I did:
Against my will.
Clanker (noun)
Clanker is a derogatory term for robots and AI technology.
We may already have the word of the year, if not the decade: clanker. Originating from the Star Wars universe, it has become a catch-all term used to refer to robots and AI. Any technology can be referred to as a clanker.
—Catherine Prasifka, Irish Independent, 14 Aug. 2025https://www.merriam-webster.com/slang/clanker
Cogsucker (noun)
A cogsucker is someone a little too obsessed with LLMs, chatbots, and AI companions. Whether they're using ChatGPT as a therapist, falling in love with Grok, or treating Replika like a best friend, these are examples that you can find populating the /r/cogsuckers subreddit

@Professor_Stevens @Tooden @georgetakei
Mark Birdsall has "always thought that America The Beautiful was a better anthem than the Star Spangled Banner" [the vocal range is definitely more accessible!] ... but that "the verse with 'alabaster cities undimmed by human tears' did not fit the reality at all".
His suggested replacement:
O beautiful for blood long shed
In Freedom's labor pains,
The sweat and tears
Of many years
Must never be in vain;
America, America,
Let all hearts beat as one,
And let there be
Equality

My elder teen used the word "self-considerate" (as in her friend wasn't going along with what she wanted her to do but she understood that it was because the friend was respecting her own boundaries) and it is now part of my vocabulary.
I am not being difficult, I am being self-considerate.

Flusterfuck, n. A completely disheveled and agitated hot mess. ‘Getting on the tram and running late, Andy dropped his phone, and when bending down to get it his bag slipped and fell from his shoulder, his mask bent both his ears forward and then slingshot his fogged up glasses across the tram floor. What a flusterfuck.’

Am now adopting the term 'spruik' to reference *anything* that claims to be the future of the internet. I think it's entirely appropriate to use an archaic Australian slang verb with the meaning:
To spin, pimp, pitch, tout, hawk, as 'those who spruik outside sleazy bars'.
🎯 Spot On! 🤌👍

Our other Mastodon instance is still in limbo, so here's a new reintroduction. “A Way with Words” is an upbeat and lively public radio show and podcast about language examined through culture, history, and family. Among other things, I collect color names.
Coquelicot is a shade of red.
The term was originally a French vernacular name for the wild corn poppy, Papaver rhoeas, and is distinguished by its bright red color and orange tint.
It eventually passed into English usage as the name of a color based upon that of the flower.
The first recorded use of this usage was in the year 1795.#flowers #color #language #FlowerPhotography #poppies #gardens #NewWords #delight #nuance #PayingAttention
