I accidentally deleted my other intro when cat jumped on lap so. Here we go again? #newtofedi
I go by Remedy and I'm into technology, writing, literature, media analysis, photography, crafting, and a lot of other things. I also really like R&B music, New Wave, and various other musical artists and bands that I'm very passionate about. I'm not entirely used to talking about myself/my general hobbies in public so bear with me LOL.
I like to write stream of consciousness blog posts and other stuff. I'm a religious studies major but not in a weird way; I'm studying queer affirming religion and spiritual pallative care. I seek to get my mDiv and volunteer in hospital and hospice chaplaincy. I'm also a writer, and I've been writing since I was a toddler. I'm working on a literary fiction novel at the moment called (working title) "Lilies in Watercolor" and I may post about that too :p
I'm currently in the progress of becoming a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). I became an attender at my local meeting in August 2026.
I'm very lucky to have found my specific instance and its community as well! Omglol seems very kind.
Also I'm an anglerfish.

Since I'm #newToFedi and #mastodon, there are things that irritate me rn. In a few days or weeks, I'll get used to most of them, just like most people reading this.
I consider tooting about those things, so they don't get lost. Someone more invested than me might pick them up, and maybe even fix them.
Is there sth like a proper hashtag for things like this? Filing a bug report is probably too high of a hurdle for me atm.

So, first off: Welcome!
glad to have you here, and I hope you'll like this little corner of the web :)
As you might've seen, people talk of "the fedi" or "the Fediverse" around here a lot, so I wanted to demistify that!
What the hell is a "Fediverse"?
Fedi is a place on the web, like where you are right now, but it's also a bit more than that. It's a network of people and communities, and the sites we use are also networked in of themselves.
On the Fediverse, there's a bunch of different sites that pass letters between eachother. These letters are the posts, the likes, the follows you leave and pretty much any other interaction.
When I follow-request someone, it's like sending them a letter from my home address (Wafrn) to their address (Mastodon.social) that says "Alexia would like to follow this person". When they accept it, I get sent a letter back that says "Your follow-request was accepted".
When I like a post, I send a letter "I liked this post" to the person that posted.
Posts themselves are also like this, but just sent en masse; When I post, I send a bunch of letters all around the internet, to every other site that Wafrn knows, that says "Alexia just posted!" that includes the post I just made. And the same goes for replies as well.
And everyone else does all of this too!
How does Bluesky play into this?
Bluesky is quite different! There instead of passing around notes, I just kinda write down my post, put it into a little ring binder with my other posts, and then there's this collection agency that looks at my ring binder tells everyone else about my posts. All posts go through this collection agency, so to speak.

What does "Fediverse" stand for, actually?
Fediverse is a combination of "Federated" and "Universe", where "Federated" is a word used to describe (in this case) how computers can work together with a common "language", or rather the proper term, using a common protocol.
The details of what protocol aren't too important, but if you're a nerd of that kind you may look into ActivityPub :)

I realise I haven't seen this kind of post for a long time, so in case it is helpful to anyone:
To help newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but *aren't* already in your profile/pinned post, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same.

#illustrationTo newcomers: you can search AND FOLLOW hashtags, just as you can people.
At first, you'll see a bunch of people with that hashtag in their name or profile; keep scrolling, the hashtag & its variations are under that, and then posts with that hashtag are under them.
When you find a hashtag that interests you, click on it, & that should bring up a list of posts under that particular tag.
In the upper right corner of the column*, next to the hashtag, there should be a button that says 'Follow hashtag'. That's it!
For very niche topics, it shouldn't be too much. For popular topics, it may be overwhelming - but after a few days, you might find people you especially click with, & can just follow them, instead of the hashtag.
*Every instance and every app is a little different, so your screen might not look *exactly* like this - but it should be close.
(I don't use an app; I always log in through the website.)

Small heads up, some people might consider "refugee" to be a loaded word so instead of tiktokrefugee I'd suggest using e.g #NewToFedi and/or #tiktokban instead, but regardless I'm happy to see people moving here!

im new to fedi. i'd like to know; is there anyway to do an inline image from a remote source? i tried the typical markdown method but i don't think it works. a little worried about the drive space and it'd be nice to use my website, plus sometimes i want the image at the top. thanks!

@horqua @Christhewriter I suggest using Hashtags-for example-when I post about the NY Mets, I put as many Mets hashtags as I can-not that it will guarantee followers-but it will improve visibility. Also, based on your App-you can also follow hashtags, and hence will see others posts on that topic, if they use that hashtag. This will introduce you to other people too. Good luck-and welcome to the platform-it takes time to find your “tribe”. Be patient-and I don’t have a bazillion followers either-

i'm not sure if the host/site you're on has it enabled
1) you can try adding the emoji code ":verified:" (without the quotes) next to your name on your profile and see if it works
2) you can copy the one i have on my profile and try pasting it next to your name on your profile
