1 of my work laptops just blue screen of death'd.
Guess that means it's time to stop work for the week, and what an amazing first week it's been at Transform / Department for Education 🙂
Also, in the countryside, we get kerosene delivered to heat our house / water.

Methinks the instructions for making matcha tea are a bit wonky.
Is it 1 gr or 1 tsp (5 gr)?I made mine with 1gram & at no point was there a 'paste'.
Still, it looked & tasted like green stuff & I think I felt the hit of caffeine though that could just be a placebo effect because of my expectations.
The good thing about only using 1 gr is it was palatable as I'm generally not keen on bitter tastes.

I'll be documenting this here and on the bird site to varying degrees. I may occasionally use the #30by30 hashtag just because I find it somewhat entertaining, but of course I'll also be at #Kates30Things
If you want to read about the original #debs60things it's available as both a blog (https://debs60things.wordpress.com) and book (https://amazon.co.uk/Year-Adventures-story-debs60things/dp/B09HG6LXTP)

Tomorrow I might spin up XCode and try using #ChatGPT to help me learn/create a simple iOS/Swift app for my weather data. We'll see how motivated I feel. 😂 🧐

🤯 From Python & Pandas to React.js
The chosen image for this piece reflects the only slightly metaphorical dumpster fire that I have been for the last 2 days as I dive oh-so-deeply into React.js with Vite and Typescript... (click the link to read more)

In the Brain Pickings newsletter there’s always something that feels relatable. Today it was an excerpt from Katherine May “This life I have made is too small. It doesn’t allow enough in: enough ideas, enough beliefs, enough encounters with the exuberant magic of existence.”
That’s sort of what the ‘do a new thing every day’ is trying to address. To break me open a bit. I’m still not managing a new thing every day, but I am getting new things done.
ANYWAY, here follow the latest #NewThings:

I just donated #plasma (not wee) for the first time with the very kind staff at NHS Blood and Transplant in Reading.
Medicines made from plasma save and transform the lives of over 17,000 people in England each year. blood.co.uk/why-give-blood…

*big inhale*
Tried to tear an apple in half with my bare hands
Signed up to donate plasma
Played battleships
Read a romance novel
Written another microfiction in 24 hours for round 2 of the NYC Midnight challengeI’d not have done many of those things if I hadn’t challenged myself to look for new things each day ☺️

I haven’t posted a #NewThings update in a while. In honesty, the general demands of life have meant I’ve not managed one (enjoyable new thing) every day, but just having the challenge going means I’m doing more new stuff than if I hadn’t. That’s also how OKRs work :)
Anyway, lately I have:
Learnt about the Fermi paradox
Made a bagel face
Walked from London Euston to Shoreditch
Eaten at Dishoom
Joined a running club
Tried moussaka (I don’t like aubergine)
Volunteered on reception at @ukgovcamp -

Today’s new thing was to ice and decorate a Christmas cake. This cake is VERY boozy. And now VERY hectic.
It started as a snow scene and escalated quickly

Today’s new thing (courtesy of my friend Ben again) was to take a piece of Cockney rhyming slang literally and enact it
“Love, where did you leave that spare toilet roll?”

Learnt what triad inversion is
Worn my fanciest outfit on a normal day
Made a Christmas quiz
and improvised a bedtime story

I’ve been tardy with the new things posts, but today it’s making a wreath.

Suggestion from my friend Sally to wear my hair in a different style for the day.I’m not massively great at hair and there’s not much time in the morning, so I chose an easy one: the triple ponytail (thank you hair bloggers for the online guides: https://missysue.com/2013/12/triple-ponytail/)
Still messed it up a bit, but eh 🤷♀️

“Spend 10 mins reading Borges's 'Library of Babel' and 30 minutes contemplating pages from its actual online incarnation, trying to find one recognisable word” https://trello.com/c/p4zFtKEzMild cheating here as I’ve already read the story, BUT I’ve never trawled through the online version, so I’m going in
The story can be found here: https://maskofreason.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/the-library-of-babel-by-jorge-luis-borges.pdf

@richardireland I haven't come across the Irish poetry yet but I wouldn't be surprised if I do! It's actually been quite a bit of fun here over my three weeks of experience.
#NewThings #LotsToLearn -
Today’s new thing:
Try to save 75% on our usual energy usage between 17:30 and 18:30Another Octopus saving session, but at a more difficult time in the evening and this time we were at home, so the challenge was:
To eat in the dark (with toddler and try to explain what’s going on and keep him entertained)
Turn off everything that could safely be switched off to get to under about 6p per kilowatt hour (kWh). We got it down to 5p per kWh. -
Today’s new thing is to learn the shipping forecast areas in their usual order around the British Isles, Ireland and Western Europe
The shipping forecast is mystical.
And - like the time I learnt the phonetic alphabet so that I could have a very low-level superpower - I feel like having secret shipping forecast knowledge can only enhance my life.

It’s 23:10 in the UK and I just submitted a 250 word story to the NYC microfiction 24 hour challenge. You get given a genre, action and word that you have to use for the story and I got:
Genre: Horror
Action: Predicting something
Word: downIt’s not a super piece of work, and horror stories are too scary for me, but it is done, and hopefully creepy enough: https://www.nycmidnight.com/mfc250-upload-success-2022
And that’s new thing number 5 ticked off the list - TICK ✅
