  10. #NewPaper out

Maria Milanović et al. (2025) Successful alien plant species exhibit functional dissimilarity from natives under varied climatic conditions but not under increased nutrient availability. Journal of Vegetation Science 36: e70032. doi.org/10.1111/jvs.70032

Alien and native species increasing in their abundance did not differ in their leaf traits. We found significantly lower specific leaf area (SLA) with an increase in mean annual temperature and lower leaf Potassium with mean annual precipitation. For trait–environment relationships, when compared to native species, successful aliens exhibited an increase in leaf Phosphorus and a decrease in leaf Potassium with an increase in mean annual precipitation. Finally, aliens' SLA decreased in plots with higher mean annual temperatures.

  11. #newPaper out with colleagues from UFZ, Environmental Agency Austria and Research Centre Jülich. We analysed in which regions of Europe the sites of the new eLTER infrastructure are underrepresented and how to adapt this to current and future environmental conditions simultaneously:

  12. New publication (in Dutch) about the history of antisemitism in Europe. The book takes 43 instances, ranging from Classic Antiquity to the decade before the Second World War, in which the authors trace latent or blatant antisemitism.

One of the instances is publisher Joan Blaeu’s description of The Promised Land in his renowned Atlas Maior (1664).

    Published by Uitgeverij Prometheus.

  13. Just published! This historic novel about a young German cartographer who finds employment with renowned 17th century publisher Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam.

The novel by Mark Boog is in Dutch. Hopefully it gets international attention and will be published in other languages somewhere in the future.

  24. Very happy to have contributed a chapter to this fine collection on the #PhilosophyOfSmell. In it, I focus on the implications of the #temporalStructure of #olfactoryExperience for the #metaphysics and #philosophy of #olfaction, and #perceptualExperience more generally.

In particular, I argue that some (though not all) objects of olfactory experience are temporally extended. This includes both objective properties of the external environment, e.g. concentration gradients, and interactions between odorants and our sensory apparatus at the receptor level.

This makes olfactory experience observer- or perspective-dependent without rendering it subjective or mind-dependent in any philosophically substantive sense. It also opens up the possibility of an event-based metaphysics of olfactory experience.

Along with the rest of the volume, the chapter can be accessed online here: doi.org/10.4324/9781003207801.

Many thanks to the editors, Ben Young and Andreas Keller, and other contributors for helpful comments and feedback. I look forward to reading the other chapters!
