  1. I took a pretty walk around Yaquina Head this morning. I slept in, but still went early enough that it wasn’t crowded when I got there, though it was getting busier by the time I left. The trick to lose the crowds is to climb the steep paths. I stopped at the top of Communication Hill for a while to watch surfers catching waves. You can see them in the water at the bottom of the picture looking south, if you look closely. #oregoncoast #newportoregon

  2. It’s really hard to get a picture of our Aussie looking happy, but I guarantee that she was having fun on the beach. Our Corgi tired himself out running up, down, and around all the dunes. We practiced a lot of recall to keep him away from the plethora of dead birds. Too many bird remains on the beach this year, with a local caution about avian influenza, so trying to be super vigilant to keep pups away. #newportoregon #oregoncoast

  3. Inspired by @thisisraerae and went to Yaquina Head to hike/walk all the ups and downs. It’s an absolutely stunning day, and the lighthouse and tide pool areas were the only crowded spots. I had Communication Hill all to myself. #oregoncoast #newportoregon

  4. I bought myself a birthday present from the Yaquina Art Association gallery. #oregoncoast #newportoregon

  5. August isn’t the month with the lowest tides, but enough sand has washed in that tide pools are often way more accessible. I went north of Yaquina Head yesterday morning, and what usually is either inaccessible or requires quite a scramble on slippery rocks was just a simple step over a rock. There’s a little cave way out that was also accessible. Super cool. #oregoncoast #newportoregon

  6. Dunes are forming! I’m sure they’re pretty close up, but I was getting wind blasted enough as it was. #oregoncoast #newportoregon

  7. A NNW wind kicked in around noon and the air quality has been improving all afternoon. It’s clearly still smoky, but much better. AQI of about 74 now according to local Purple Air sensor. AirNow shows 156 for Newport, but the reporting station is 10 miles inland in Toledo. Huge difference in climate between the two towns. #orwx #newportoregon #oregoncoast

  8. If I believe my iPhone weather app, Newport has a worse AQI than Portland this morning. It says 153 here, not sure where it’s measured, though a Purple Air map shows one at 134. I should get a sensor, weather is very local here (like by the block), and it’s super hazy, but I don’t smell smoke. The sunrise picture sure shows it though. #orwx #newportoregon #oregoncoast

  9. Had planned to go back to Portland this evening, now delaying a few days to wait out the worst of the smoke and heat. There’s a little smoke visible in Newport, but the air quality is still decent so far (45 AQI according to my Apple Watch) Still have a strong N wind blowing. Two beach pics at 5:30, you can see the smoke (that’s not clouds or fog). #newportoregon #oregoncoast #orwx

  10. I went on a guided hike in the Yakona Nature Preserve yesterday. I had never heard of this place, but saw the event posted and am glad I signed up. It serves as both a preserve, learning center, and arts center, but is closed to the public except for events or prearranged access. The guide shared history of the land, the native people in Oregon and the northwest, and flora and fauna. It rained for almost the whole hike, then the sun came out at the end. #newportoregon #oregoncoast

  11. After enduring 2 weeks of hot weather in Northern California, and discovering that my Dad’s ginormous A/C unit can’t keep up with cooling the upstairs room where I was staying, I’m back in Oregon. Yesterday was a beautiful day in Portland, but we came over to the coast today and I’m really reveling in the 60 degrees and foggy weather in Newport. It’s gloriously chilly. #oregoncoast #newportoregon

  12. Burnley is 8 years old today! (Where does time go?). I’m not home to celebrate his birthday, so I asked my husband to give him a good treat from me. He got to walk down to the Bayfront where he regularly cons shop owners out of treats, so I don’t think he’ll be starving today. #dogsofmastodon #newportoregon

  13. When we moved into our place in Newport, the small side yard was an unkempt hill of weeds and blackberry vines. We worked with a landscape company to turn that into a very usable deck, a small garden area, and a small lawn for doggie business. I didn’t realize how persistent blackberry vines are, it took me 2 years to stop them coming back en masse. Now I keep that little clear strip outside the fence as a DMZ zone. I keep it clear with regular weeding and vinegar. #gardening #newportoregon

  14. The coastal A/C turned off today. This is 3 blocks from the ocean. The good news is that the humidity is super low and the wind picked up, so it doesn’t feel bad. Still the warmest it’s been when we’ve been here in Newport. #oregoncoast #newportoregon

  15. I walked down to the jetty for this morning’s very low minus tide. The lowest tide was at 6:30am, and I didn’t get there until an hour later, but it didn’t matter, the tide was so low today that there was still plenty to see. #oregoncoast #newportoregon

  16. Coastal A/C is still on. It was 90 degrees at the 4 mile marker on Hwy 20, and is 70 about 3 blocks in from the ocean. #newportoregon #oregoncoast

  17. There’s a heat wave forecast for #portland this weekend and early next week. It’s also forecast to be relatively warm in #newportoregon, 77 on Saturday and 83 on Sunday. That’s unusual, as it normally gets foggy there when it’s hot inland. We’re heading to Newport tomorrow, so we’ll see how it turns out.

  18. I bought this watercolor painting from the Yaquina Art Association (the gallery at the turnaround in Nye Beach). It’s intended as a gift for a friend whose birthday is in a few weeks. I like it so much that I need to resist temptation to keep it for myself (that means it’s a great gift, I think). Now I know the artist, and I can visit the gallery anytime I want to see more of her work. #newportoregon #oregoncoast

  19. Having our first beers at the new Claim 52 location in Newport. They took over the old Rogue bayfront pub. Besides the beers being tasty, the extra cool part is that they reached out to all the Rogue staff who were abruptly let go last year, many of them are here. #beer #newportoregon

  20. The perfect antidote for too much stress at work. #newportoregon #oregoncoast

  21. No visible sunset tonight, light rain has already come. But my post work walk was quite pretty. This is the calm before tomorrow’s wind and rain. #oregoncoast #newportoregon

  22. Guess what? No rain after all, another gorgeous sunset. #oregoncoast #newportoregon

  23. ICYMI - @lincolnchronicle.org is bridging articles to Mastodon. Give them a follow if you enjoy central Oregon Coast news. #oregoncoast #newportoregon

  24. It’s that time of the year, for the cool coastal phenomenon where it looks like something vile washed up on the beach. In reality, it’s these cool sea creatures called velella velella. They showed up on Nye Beach overnight - not there after sunset last night, blanketing the beach from one end to the other this morning. Read more about these cool creatures here: beachconnection.net/news/velel. #newportoregon #oregoncoast

  25. I went out to Yaquina Head briefly on a whim after running an errand to the hardware store. And the lighthouse was open for the first time I’ve seen when I’ve been there. Super cool. The previous pic I posted was looking up the staircase to the top, sadly the stairs were closed. #newportoregon #oregoncoast

  26. Rainbow is trying hard to emerge. I managed to catch it and still get home before the skies opened up. #newportoregon #oregoncoast
