My day 3 got unexpectedly truncated, so didn't get to see all the things I was excited to see, alas. BUT I did get to see SML and any day you get to see SML is a good day, regardless of what drama comes after.
Day 2 at Newport Jazz 2026 was an all-timer! Superb sets from start to finish. Hard to pick a top 3, but I'll do it anyway:
Oh/Akinmusire/Sorey are perhaps my jazz band of the year. Magical interplay shifting seamlessly between improvising on a theme and pure exploration. Wowza!
Gotts Street Park bringing Leeds groove to Rhode Island. Olive Jones (another top set) sitting in for half, turning things to pure soul. Excellent set.
Kamasi Washington with Chief Adjuah doing a Miles + Coltrane (+ Rollins) tribute. The set was filled with mashups pairing two songs from each and the arrangements were freak-out next-level and the playing beyond. Holy shit kind of stuff.
Among some other heavies, I saw some aliens play music in Newport yesterday

Newport Jazz day 1 was delightful. Three top tier sets and the rest was pretty great as well. Chicago Underground Duo with the next-level freeform, Angine De Poitrine's USA debut was a triumph, and Charles Lloyd was his legendary, transcendent self, still a cool magician well into his eighties.
Yes, I have now seen Angine de Poitrine but I won't let it get to my head. I have no idea what the future holds for them and it's not clear to me they are worthy of the cult status they've created for themselves, but they put on a great set.

“I’ve thought about how many important saxophonists Roy [Haynes] has played with, whether Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Trane, Eric Dolphy, Joe Henderson, or Kenny Garrett. Roy played with everyone. I did a Charlie Parker tribute gig with him at The Jazz Showcase. I’ll never forget it. We were playing mostly Charlie Parker tunes, and I turned around to see a big poster of Bird on the wall behind Roy.
