Fun day at the Folk fest. Highlights for me were mostly were sets from bands I've already loved and enjoyed for a while: Courtney Barnett, Lucy Dacus, and best set of the day from personal fave Fruit Bats. Everything was enjoyable, nothing stood out as super noteworthy, which is totally fine. Most importantly, it was a chill and easy day at the Fort, which is kind of rare. Did manage to get sunburned, which is also kind of rare. We'll see what today brings...

Jesse Welles! Masterful Newport debut. My favorite set of the weekend thus far. In-the-moment protest songs 100% on point and 100% sounding great. Plus sit ins from Lukas Nelson, Nathaniel Rateliff and Tommy Prine and an awesome cover of Have Your Ever Seen the Rain. Not only did he blow right through his set time but he was also granted an encore which is basically unheard of.

Today: first day of my 14th Newport Folk Festival since my first in 2007. A very interesting day at the Fort, including a 90ish minute rain delay. Everything I heard was good, some great, with some non-musical annoyances mixed in. Not sure anything will top the first thing I saw today, which was Hannah Cohen. But we'll see what happens the rest of the weekend.

I did get to see Kenny Loggins sing Footloose and Kim Deal play Cannonball, so I'm counting today as a win.

I lied, there were no #newportfolk updates today. Perfect weather today, lots of good hangs with awesome people. Had a great day. Musically, caught a little bit of almost everything (although managed to miss the unannounced Beck set), but probably one of my least favorite days in all my years at Newport, maybe a B, but that's grading on a serious curve.

A fine first Friday at Newport Folk Fest, long day jam-packed with tunes, but the craziest thing was a sudden relentless swarm of dragonflies that descended during Guster's set, never seen anything like it, not nearly captured in this vid. Pretty wild. Luckily dragonflies are harmless and pretty cool.
