  1. My new HP EliteBook 840 G5 Is startlingly good on Fedora. I picked up a new battery from eBay and installed it myself, and everything just works! Suspend and standby are lovely, the keyboard backlight seems to be independently managed from the OS so I don't love that, but everything else is great! I pulled the storage and RAM from my old Latitude and everything fit and works perfectly! I think I prefer my MacBook Pro's keyboard though.

  12. After almost 5 years of using company-provided MacBooks, I’ve decided to have my own. My last personal laptop was a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex5, and it is now my daughter’s laptop, so I was without a personal PC for years. It felt like homelessness.

Switching from space gray company-provided M2 Pro to my own silver M4 Pro.

Also, I really like to set up new laptops and phones from scratch.

  17. I finally ordered a Framework 13 with the new AMD Ryzen CPU by @frameworkcomputer.

While I liked my Pulse 14 Gen 3 by @tuxedocomputers, the Framework's upgradability convinced me.

Can't wait for the delivery. Of course it's going to run @nixos_org.

  22. Let me introduce you to aceBSD! Yesterday, while I was out grocery shopping, I saw a special offer on a final unit, and I had already been thinking for a while about getting a mid-range laptop to take with me to conferences, on trips, etc. Something small, practical, with an HDMI port, and capable of running at least one of the BSDs decently. After some careful thought, I decided to go for it today.

It's an Acer Swift Go 14 - with an Intel i5, 16 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB NVMe SSD. What I really like is that it’s compact and has a high-definition OLED screen, a good keyboard, and for the rest... we’ll see. I just used Clonezilla to make a backup of the preinstalled Windows (I didn’t even boot into it...) and I’m now installing OpenBSD. I had to disable VMD (from a hidden BIOS menu) because otherwise the installer wouldn’t detect the NVMe. It also seems to detect the Wi-Fi, but I’m proceeding with a USB-C Ethernet adapter just to be safe.

I got it at a good price, so this could be the ideal solution. Fingers crossed, and… we’ll see!

I'll keep posting about this adventure, with the hashtag #aceBSD

  29. For the infosec.exchange/@loneicewolf/ post I did just a second ago, I have now bought a laptop! I am waiting for it to arrive; it is a.. Acer laptop! With just 2 things being "not top notch", whereas one of them I can fix, the other one I can't "fix".

    - Acer Aspire 5 15,6" QHD
    - Radeon Graphics
    - Ryzen 7 7730U
    - 16 GB RAM
    - 512 GB SSD
    - Windows 11 Home

The 2 "not top notch" things are:
    - Win 11 (Fixable, I Will erase & install Linux on it)

    - GPU (Not Fixable, I will just make use of the other things[`fast speeds, RAM, cpu, etc`] to "try to compensate" )

This will be my new 'portable research station' xD so to say. Anyway, I wish everyone a nice day! As I will perform #JTAG #uart and stuff like that on it as well. #HDD #SSD #nls933wdll is also going to be a major thing I will be focusing on, on this laptop.
