  1. In comparison, Daryl and Daryl were written far better, without a single line in the whole series. Right now they're playing the piano duet from the movie Exodus.* (I know this piece because I learned the top hand back in my piano days.)

(No, the actors are not playing it. I can TELL.)

*Old school Zionist propaganda. But the song is really cool.

  2. Joanna on Newhart was written like a wet empty cereal box. She has very little character of her own, only as a foil/support for Dick and the other characters. Seven seasons in and I couldn't describe anything about her personality or backstory.

But the actor really makes up for it with her incredible eye expressions that speak beyond the script. Hats off to her for doing the most as a very poorly written sidekick.

  3. I'm about halfway through Newhart. I've been wanting to comment, but too much posting isn't good for my energy levels.

But I have been wanting to comment on Larry, Daryl, and Daryl, who might be my favorite sitcom TV characters ever. They are turning out to be quite autistic-coded, and in do well at depicting country bumpkins in a lovable (rather than hateful) way.

The other characters don't do them justice (Dick keeps undermining them) but I see through that. Sometimes a side character comes along who reflects what I see in them.

There's this one moment in season 4 where they start an escort service (I am not shitting you), and in spite of Dick trying to stop her, a guest at the inn goes out with them. She shows up with them the next morning looking like she'd just had the best, most wild fuck of her life. It was so freaking hot.

But then it turns out they just took her to a bat cave and she got bats in her hair and she was actually freaked out. But the actress did a great job at giving an ambiguous look that also covered the base of "freaky-fucked silly by these three and now I'm a new woman," so I can pretend my head canon is the correct one. I can pretend the writers and actors wanted my version and they had to change it because it was the 80s in the USA. It's a likely scenario.

  4. On his blog, @paulharrisshow tells his favorite Bob #Newhart story:

It's also one of mine. The other story I like is about the network suit who gave him a note, I think on the 1980s "Newhart" show, telling him, "Bob needs to lose his stammer."

Newhart supposedly sent a note back saying, "This stammer bought me a house in Beverly Hills."

  5. I watched the first episode of #Newhart which is a show I haven't seen since I was a little kid watching reruns with my dad on Nick at Nite or TV Land or whatever. I laughed out a loud a few times which doesn't often happen when I'm just watching stuff alone, will probably continue watching more episodes in the future.

  6. RIP Bob. You were mostly before my time, but I saw you enough on tv to split a gut from your deadpan humour. #Newhart

  7. The final scene of the final episode of #Newhart, in which we learn that the entire story arc of the series was just a dream and we are back in the old Bob Newhart Show.

  8. #BobNewhart Dead: Iconic #Comedian Was 94

Bob #Newhart, the genteel but sharply satirical #comic whose TV series “The Bob Newhart Show” and “Newhart” were huge hits throughout the 1970s and ’80s, #died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 94.
