CW: TLDR: day 1 of 4 bikepacking from Boston to bar harbor: Boston to Portsmouth
The original plan for day 1 was Boston to Portland. But the dry run a few weeks ago made it clear that I should split it into two days to have fun.

I am kinda in a very different mindset this time around - I’m not in a rush, I’m not training to be faster. I’m just enjoying the ride and anything along the way. So I stopped a lot to take pictures. I slowed down to look at interesting buildings. My plan was to stop at Newburyport for food, but West Village Cafe in Boxford is open and I stopped by for a second breakfast and coffee. The owner himself is a cyclist too - he even makes kits named after his cafe and has them in the shop. He asked me right away where i was going when I walked in. He told me he would ride with his friends for 500 miles to go through all New England states in 4 days! It was so nice to talk with him.
I saw clouds rolling in and wind picking up so I was worried it’d rain. I checked the radar at the cafe and it was clear I’d cross the path of the rain. Soon after I left Boxford it started raining - a few sprinkles first but then it got a bit more serious. I am prepared! I put on the very lightweight rain jacket and kept on riding. It was great to keep myself dry and warm! The rain stopped when I was approaching Newburyport and the sky was blue and sun was shining. Great day!
From there it was NH coastal roads that are very beautiful but the headwind was brutal. I’m happy that traffic was very light being on a workday after Labor Day.
Hotel Thaxter is awesome. I asked them if I could check in early yesterday and they said they’d prioritize cleaning my room and if I arrived too early they could keep my bike secure. They texted me around 1pm saying my room was ready. I guess I let them down arriving at 2:30pm 😅
Only ~90k tomorrow to Portland. Should be an easy day. Now I need a shower and more food. Ciao.

NEWBURYPORT — "Starting on March 17, the Newburyport Public Library will have a new seed library on the second floor of the library next to the computer area. Browse the library’s collection of seeds including flowers, vegetables, herbs, and many more. All visitors are eligible to take out up to 10 packages of seeds per week and no library card is required. For full details on how to use the seed library, please check the seed library binder that will be located on top of the drawers. Have some extra seeds you would like to share? The seed library will be accepting seed donations starting on March 10. Ask staff for details. Contact the library for more details or any questions you may have.
