Although I've been on here for a few months, I've been dipping in and out and still feel like a newbie so bear with me here...

1. I see a lot of people with hashtags in their bio. Does this actually make a difference to how discoverable your profile is?

2. Both the Mastodon clients I've tried out have a "trending" tab/section where you can see either trending posts or trending hashtags. With no algorithms going on here, what is considered trending content? How would the trending posts section differ from my federated timeline for example?

Is there any way I would be able to read posts from people in opposite timezones other than getting up at 4am in the night or hoping that someone in my timeline will boost them during my daytime?

An additional #MastodonNewbie question. There is a 'language' button in the thing I'm typing this #toot in right now. With me, it's set on NL (Dutch) as a standard, yet I toot in Dutch and English. Is it good practice to set the function to EN every time I toot in English, or is the only thing being influenced by that the correction of my spelling?

Soooo .... is there a trick to posting photos here or is the server just utterly slammed? I try to upload a photo but it just sits on "uploading" for a while then "processing" for something like 15 minutes then disappears entirely. Mobile or PC, no difference. Would a different Mastodon server be better? The world needs more cat photos! #NewbieQuestions

hey, is there a browser extension I can use so liking a post on someone else's mastodon site doesn't require a popup, manually typing my mastodon address and a redirect before it will let me like it?
Or is there some other way to do this?

On a related note, for people on my instance should I just set up a manual redirect from the instanceURL/@username to instanceURL/web/@username?

I'm wondering what happens to your #account if the instance you're on goes down, for example if the owner can't or won't upkeep the server any longer.

Do you lose your account/followers/posts with no way to log in?
Is there a risk to being on a smaller run server? Or am I misunderstanding how it all works (quite possibly)

Some people seem to have several mastodon IDs on different servers. How does one know which to follow? #newbiequestions
