I think, in terms of #existentialism, why the whole #newatheism is such a failure is its adherents seem to want to declare themselves enlightened simply by rejecting obviously untrue traditional beliefs. But that's the starting point. From there one has to construct a morality, i.e. a meaning greater than just the finite self.

After two chapters, it's clear that Hedges likes to labour the point, and needs a more assertive editor to prune his work down to the essentials. The self-deluding fundamentalism of the neocon #NewAtheism has been obvious to me since Hitchens and his ilk started defending the US-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. But surely even someone to whom this is news doesn't need 75 pages of mostly repetitive prose to get the point.
