  1. The Dead Already Paid for Washington Square Park

New York University made an announcement this week. The school pledged $6 million over four years to the Washington Square Park Conservancy, the nonprofit steward of the nine-and-three-quarter-acre square at the foot of Fifth Avenue. The university's own headline chose a gambler's verb: "Doubles Down." The money is real. The park needs care, and the Conservancy has paid for horticulture crews and free programming there for years. NYU students treat the park as their quad because it is one. A school without a campus was handed a campus by geography, and the students love the ground they borrow. Grant all of that. The gift is generous, and the park will be cleaner for it. […]

Understanding The Lethal U.S. Strike On A Boat Allegedly Being Used For “Narcoterrorism” by Joyce Vance

My Conversation with NYU Law Prof Ryan Goodman

Transcript (see online edition, link at endRy)…

Ryan Goodman joined me this morning for a live chat to help us understand the legal issues and the law surrounding Friday’s report in the Washington Post that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave verbal instructions to “kill everybody” in advance of the September 2 attack on a boat in the Caribbean. The administration has maintained that the vessel was being used for narcoterrorism. Other reports have suggested that people being trafficked were on board.

The report was enough to generate bipartisan support in both houses of Congress for oversight. Yes, you read that sentence correctly.

This morning’s conversation sets the table for understanding the investigation that’s about to occur. Ryan and I lay out the law and the basic questions that will need to be answered, like whether this is a non-international armed conflict, as the White House maintains, or something else and how that decision impacts the law that applies to determine whether it was a crime to kill the survivors of the initial attack on September 2.

This conversation builds on my post Saturday evening, which you may want to review because it outlines the facts the Washington Post reported and some legal basics. It also relates back to the post I wrote after six Democratic members of Congress made a video reminding members of the military and intelligence communities that they should not obey illegal orders. At the time, Trump dismissed them as seditious, reposting a Truth Social poster who suggested George Washington would have hanged the six. Military and FBI investigations were opened. As we discussed, they were accurately stating the law, and the issue is one of the country, not partisan politics.

    We’re in this together, Joyce

  5. How did human consciousness evolve? Neuroscientist Nikolay Kukushkin traces our sophisticated brains back to the first complex cells – Live Science

The evolution of life on Earth ‘almost predictably’ led to human intelligence, neuroscientist says

Neuroscientist Nikolay Kukushkin spoke to Live Science about how human consciousness evolved.

“Consciousness,” although challenging to define, can be thought of as a first-person awareness of one’s surroundings and oneself. You sense the world through your eyes, nose, ears and hands, and track your internal bodily states via interactions between your cells. These data streams collide to give rise to your personal perception of the world, your place within it, and your motivations for moving through it.

An enduring question about consciousness is how this state of awareness comes about. Is consciousness simply the result of a bunch of chemical reactions? Or is there some extra “secret ingredient”?

In the book “One Hand Clapping: Unraveling the Mystery of the Human Mind” (Prometheus/Swift Press, 2025), New York University neuroscientist Nikolay Kukushkin explores these questions. To do so, he traces the evolutionary history of human consciousness from the formation of Earth’s first DNA molecules to present-day Homo sapiens. Kukushkin studies memory in non-brain biological systems, such as human kidney cells, as well as in simple organisms such as sea slugs. He also considers himself a “molecular philosopher.”

Colleges should go ‘medieval’ on students to beat AI cheating, NYU official says

By Jason Ma, Weekend Editor, August 31, 2025 at 6:24 PM EDT

In medieval times, students often listened to teachers read from books, and some schools even discouraged students from writing down what they heard, Shirky said. Getty Images
    • Amid the raging debate over the proper role of generative AI in schools, a vice provost at New York University suggested colleges revive some educational practices that date back to medieval times, namely focusing on oral instruction and examination in the classroom. That comes as students have increasingly relied on chatbots to complete assignments.

Educators have been struggling over how students should or should not use artificial intelligence, but one New York University official suggests going old school—really, really old school.

In a New York Times op-ed on Tuesday, NYU’s vice provost for AI and technology in education, Clay Shirky, said he previously had counseled more “engaged uses” of AI where students use the technology to explore ideas and seek feedback, rather than “lazy AI use.”

But that didn’t work, as students continued using AI to write papers and skip the reading. Meanwhile, tools meant to detect AI cheating produce too many false positives to be reliable, he added.

“Now that most mental effort tied to writing is optional, we need new ways to require the work necessary for learning,” Shirky explained. “That means moving away from take-home assignments and essays and toward in-class blue book essays, oral examinations, required office hours and other assessments that call on students to demonstrate knowledge in real time.”

Such a shift would mark a return to much older practices that date back to Europe’s medieval era, when books were scarce and a university education focused on oral instruction instead of written assignments.

In medieval times, students often listened to teachers read from books, and some schools even discouraged students from writing down what they heard, Shirky said. The emphasis on writing came hundreds of years later in Europe and reached U.S. schools in the late 19th century.

“Which assignments are written and which are oral has shifted over the years,” he added. “It is shifting again, this time away from original student writing done outside class and toward something more interactive between student and professor or at least student and teaching assistant.”

That may entail device-free classrooms as some students have used AI chatbots to answer questions when called on during class.

He acknowledged logistical challenges given that some classes have hundreds of students. In addition, an emphasis on in-class performance favors some students more than others.
