While walking the dog this morning I listened to this traumatic episode of New Scientist's "The World, The Universe And Us" starting on the topic of the Nepal disaster, then onto glaciers collapsing more generally and then onto the UN's acknowledgement that 1.5°C is gone.
Then I ran into a couple of regulars at the coffee shop. One's just back from a long weekend in Queenstown where they took a helicopter ride up a mountain because.. well.. it was fun apparently. We're f***ing doomed by our own ignorance and stupidity. I wish I could just enjoy this ride and not care about its path like old matey in the chopper.

I just watched New Scientist’s excellent, and frightening, new explainer video about the AMOC ocean current that moves heat through the Atlantic. It’s why we may be dangerously close to locking in colossal, irreversible changes to the planets climate, which could happen rapidly over just a couple of decades and then change the planet’s climate for many centuries.

“Dozens of metres” of sea level rise is mentioned as a real possibility over the coming centuries, should AMOC falter and cause the release of a lot of the carbon we burned that’s so far been soaked into the oceans.

It felt eerily like I could be watching a slow-motion global-scale version of the start of today’s awful, catastrophic flood in Nepal and Tibet.

Every politician that’s been sabotaging efforts to decarbonise our economies should watch this video. Every voter should be thinking about this at elections.

Does anyone subscribe to New Scientist?

I keep seeing very interesting articles that I want to read, but it's a lot of money to spend.

I know they do a cheaper trial period, but just wanted to ask if anyone has an opinion about whether it's worth it before I commit to anything.

Last week we were in Spain to catch some sun, and the moon got in the way. At one point, a wind turbine got in the way just as the sun was setting behind the horizon.

It was a terrific spot at Fuente Sidres Albergue, a pilgrim hostel on the Camino Way (same place the BBC were at).

With only 1m45s to catch a decent photo of totality, and also spend time actually watching with my own eyes, most of my photos were a bit shaky.

It was a pretty cool experience though.

I have done the insurance letter and supervision (and a bit of #NewScientist catch-up) and I am somehow exhausted...

For #today the top two items are (a) getting insurance clearance for a taster session of a new Repair Café and (b) a PhD supervision. Also the #NewScientist article wave is breaking over my open tabs...

#today is conference #poster work day (and bath day, unconnected).

Tonight is possibly clubbing with friends who have made a house sale after months of (the usual) horrors...

And it seems to be #NewScientist article splurge today, but that may not get fully absorbed until sometime tomorrow!

#today I will ride the #NewScientist article wave, (re!)read the constitution of an org that I chair and at least draft my rousing AGM speech and agenda, work on my research, and join a brainstorming session (or two) on-line...

I'd be unconvinced that I'd really managed any of the "retire early" thing except (ducks incoming rotten fruit, pitchforks, etc) that I'm only now considering getting out of bed to go work at my desk like a grown-up...

I am cheered in my #research by having just found that an apparent test error in the #buildingModel that I'm working on is apparently an error in the test itself, and the model is meeting expectations better than expected in this part! Hurrah!
