  1. My fascination with the culture of black metal has always outpaced my interest in listening to it, and that's probably what motivated me to post audio of Venom's infamous between-song banter around 20 years ago on WFMU's (now-shuttered) blog. This was the era during which the internet still felt like a fun combination of a library and a playground (as opposed to now, when it often feels like a Dollar General crossed with a tedious timeshare presentation).

There was also a local angle to my interest, as the recording was sourced from Venom's 1986 gig with Black Flag which took place at Trenton's City Gardens -- a 15 minute walk from my high school and the place where I first cut my teeth on the weirdo music.

I wasn't at the show, but the clip (recorded by Black Flag vocalist Henry Rollins and later released as a bootleg 45 by Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label) enjoyed a quiet cultural ascent as an in-joke amongst underground music glitterati, culminating with the Beastie Boys sampling it on 1992's "Check Your Head".

When I posted the audio in the early 00s, a lot of music bloggers were in a race with one another to spackle the internet with all sorts of obscure sounds, and the WFMU blog allowed me to make some modest contributions to that moment. This is the one I remain most proud of, and I remember my astonishment at seeing how it immediately lit up the music blogosphere. It's almost quaint now to think about something so random and ridiculous "going viral" without a dumb marketing strategy at work in the background.

Despite its absurdity, I still think of this as a truly fascinating and artistically important piece of audio. It may not be Alan Lomax, but there's no denying the lasting impact of this hastily-made recording of a black metal band's between-song vamping. The fans who ventured out for the gig on a random Wednesday night in the 80s certainly had no idea they'd be part of something still talked about 40 years later.

Someone uploaded it to YouTube 19 years ago along with the (uncredited) text of my original blog post. Here it is.

    RIP Cronos. #venom #cronos #newjersey #heavymetal

  10. Rep. LaMonica McIver is a true hero. She was arrested for doing her job of Congressional oversight at the #ICE concentration camp in Newark, where she was clearly targeted as a Black woman. She's endured persecution from the regime *while pregnant*, still having to fight off false charges that could land her in prison.

She cannot be stopped and just delivered a healthy baby girl. She deserves ALL our support in her fight for democracy and her journey with her family.
