"Horde mode", at least in my experiences with games like #RogueTrooper or #NeverDead, was a creation of necessity. We didn't have time to create a bespoke Deathmatch game time with its own balancing and mechanics so, in order to thick the "must have multiplayer" box, we went with a co-op experience based on single-player mechanics so we didn't have to make two separate games!
