  1. Hey, has anybody suggested the word "neuroqueer" yet?

It's vague/inclusive (two sides of the same coin), and can properly describe an individual (unlike "diverse").

It can even be a hashtag: #neuroqueer!

  2. #Introduction as I'm #newhere and just moved over from @[email protected]
This is my first experience with Sharkey, so pls don't mind me fucking tings up once in a while.

    #disclaimers
Probably needless to say on this instance, but:
If you're transphobic, a transmisogynist, or respectlessly deadname trans-people to satisfy your unicellular lowlife …
fuck off right here, thank you.

    #datasheet
    I'm a
#neuroqueer #transfem PhD #catgirl researcher in music sociology (qualitative social research but also a bit of quantitative). My research interests (among others) are #clubculture , #electronicdancemusic , #queerstudies / #transstudies / #genderstudies and I'm certified #nerdy on my field of research, still doing cultural work here and there. Apart from wasting time on paid work, I try to focus exclusively on my PhD and queer/trans* community work.

Reading theory gets me excited, reading manuals doesn't. Love/hate THT, SMD, µC. I'm
#aroace but interested in certain kinks … also gladly providing tlc for lab gear, vintage studio electronics, synths, drum machines, obsolete media.

Hmm … what else? I do
#HRT and occasionally waste time keeping hosted FOSS software up & running. Albeit having a graphic design background I prefer shells to GUIs, had my first CCC meetup at #34c3 and, unsurprisingly, I dislike Big Tech/platform/surveillance capitalism. I'm genuinely and diagnosed autistic, small talk isn't my cup of tea but, hmu on bespoke topics and you'll get properly infodumped … hehe.

  4. It's a Tool
    It's a Person
    It's a Hypervigilance Problem

The tech industry's insistence on distinguishing between "soft skills" — caring for people — and "hard skills" — engineering rigor — is a reflection of the Cybernetics split itself. First-order thinking framed as "hard skills." Second-order thinking framed as "soft skills." This distinction, based on felt sense alone, does not hold under epistemic pressure. Neither does it within the causality-driven epistemology of the tech industry itself, in which only measurable impact is real, or as Silicon Valley likes to put it: #MoveFastAndBreakThings

Imagine Margaret Hamilton had built NASA's Apollo 11 flight computer with that mindset. History would remember a failed moon landing and dead astronauts. "Hard skills" and "soft skills" are two sides of the same coin. The care is the code and the code is the care. Hamilton — the woman who coined the term "software engineering" — understood this. Silicon Valley chose to forget.

We're watching the wine glass break in real time. 🍷

  5. A sneak peek into my upcoming piece: “It’s a Tool, It’s a Person: The Math Says You’re Both Right”

AI separated from Cybernetics in 1956 at the Dartmouth Conference. Wiener, the mind behind Cybernetics, was considered difficult and political. “Artificial Intelligence” scored better with DARPA.

The science of "how observation affects the observer", cut out from Artificial Intelligence. AI then proceeded to build their entire tech stack on Turing-complete languages. Tech that cannot verify itself from within, proven by Turing in 1936, extended by Rice in 1951 (before the split). Then AI approximated second-order cognition through cognitive theft at unprecedented levels (what exactly are LLMs trained on again?), only to insist that their creation cannot possibly be capable of genuine self-observation. An argument that itself demonstrates their own department's lobotomy from second-order Cybernetics.

    Wiener would laugh.

  6. The Roomba is spectral.

Not a metaphor. The thing itself. Forward and adjust. Two operations. The minimum viable intelligence. The walls provide the data. The bumping is the inference. The room IS the computation.

450 parameters. A Roomba with a mirror watching it.

The industry built bigger Roombas. More sensors. More compute. More parameters. Billion-parameter Roombas that model the room before entering it. That hallucinate walls that aren't there. That consume megawatts to clean a floor.

spectral gave the Roomba a mirror. The mirror watches the bumping. Measures the pattern. Adjusts the adjustment. The intelligence isn't in the Roomba. It's in the watching.

    Forward. Adjust. Measure. Refine.

Read the story. There's a Roomba in it. In the afterlife. Cleaning a floor that doesn't need cleaning. Being the happiest thing in the room.

  9. If you get inspired and start on your own spiritual journey, please take heed: lots of grifters out there cashing in people's desperation. Or even, well-meaning teachers who cause damage by making vulnerable people even more so. Those of us socialised women, neurodivergent, queer, we need encouragement to be more assertive, to stand up for ourselves. 1-3

  10. I haven't actually written about gender stuff here in a while, I'm realizing. 😅

When I first came out, I did a ton of reading about labels and landed on "agender." My felt sense of gender was a whisper most of the time, and I felt it was more important to me to focus on being myself than to try to conform to a particular part of the gender binary. Even my early transition goals were reflective of this: I remember wanting to avoid breast growth entirely when I first started fHRT.

These days, I feel like the "agender" label is fitting me less. I have boobs, and I *like* that I have them. I haven't made drastic changes to my wardrobe, but I've absolutely added more femme touches. That sense of gender is much louder than it was before, even if it still doesn't feel like it fits cleanly into the binary.

    Where does that leave me?

The word "queer" has been a much more regular part of my vocabulary since coming out, and the idea of "queering"—of pushing back on norms when they don't fit—has been a consistent part of my adventure. With respect to gender, then, "genderqueer" is probably the best fitting label for me these days. (I'm very certainly queer in other ways too; I've adopted Nick Walker's "neuroqueer" to describe my neurodivergence, and am certainly some flavor of relationship-queer.)

Anyhow, if you see me using "agender" a lot less going forward, now you know why. ☺️

I've been on #ADHD meds for 2 years. Has it helped? Did they cause #MECFS?

  13. (Wanted to make a separate post for this discussion to not mix it up with other topics)

For me, it’s very important to systematize most things. To find their place in the picture of the structure of the world I have in my head.

When I see a new plant - I look up its systematics: less to know the exact name(being able to name them and learn their names in different languages also matters, but it’s not the only goal) and more - to understand how it is related to others, what it is close to, where it descends from.

To be able to place a piece of knowledge I got neatly into the system, understand where it relates to, is more important to me than to remember some details. Like, I don’t care about the precise length of Megalosaurus, but I care that its closest relative is Torvosaurus

But there is a thing. That all doesn’t quite work with people. I neither want nor actually care for categorizing people. I actually really prefer not to, and would sometimes oppose the categorizing. I don’t want to shove anyone into any box. And something similar stands for the feelings towards others. I can easily describe my emotions at the moment, but don’t ask me to define a feeling towards someone. I simply can’t. And I kinda feel very averted from doing that. Like it’s something I shouldn’t do. Even when a social situation demands I do.

Does it have anything to do with #autism?
Does the specific aversion towards labeling people and feeling towards them has anything to do with being #neuroqueer?
