Hi all! Here at neuromatch.social we are doing some self-reflection on what are the benefits and impacts of our instance, not only for our own members (#NeuroMatchStodon) but also for the larger community. 🧠 :blobcatreach:

• Have we ever helped you in any way?
• Do you like having access to the thoughts of a bunch of weird (neuro-) scientists?
• Or perhaps, as a weird (neuro-) scientist or other person from the instance you like this window out to the world, if so why?
• How would the world be different if our instance wasn't there?

Do you have an artistic soul? We are looking to replace our instance banner - currently, the default one - for something that reflects better the philosophy of our instance: neuroscientists (and adjacent) interested in improving ecosystems - academic, scientific, or web-based; trying to make the world better, one neuron at a time; being kind to each other and supporting open scientific discourse. Y'know!

Any banner proposals? Feel free to add them in answer, or by DM to this account, before the 30th of Nov. We will then vote for our favourite one!

Dear #neuromatchstodon - our instance rules havent changed much since we started, and there are a few updates we would like to make. These are rules that come from a few years of moderating and thinking about what we would like to promote and discourage as an instance. There is also a bit of housekeeping to do.

• Grifts: expanding the "No NFTs" rule to cover a broader range of grifts, with specific mention of abuse of academic/scientific power
• Conspiracies: similar clarification as above, with caveat for controversial ideas including good-faith criticism of western science
• Content Warnings: we currently don't have a c/w rule, and want to balance exposure to unwanted content without asking people to self-censor. Clarification given for violent and sexual content.
• Housekeeping: synchronizing instance rules with code of conduct.

As a cooperative instance, we want to reach some consensus on these, and welcome all edits, discussion and input. Consensus inverts the normal majoritarian process by putting the work before the vote - instead of trying to squeak out a 50% majority, we want everyone to have a chance to make proposals meet their needs. We will wait at least a week for input before calling a vote. Each change will be voted on separately. Members can discuss the rules here or in the social-wg channel in our discord, and a reminder that you can make a post "local only" in the web interface or by adding 👁️ to the end of the post. We are making this post public in case the broader fedi has input.

Please tag @jonny in any responses as they are the primary author of the proposal (but as always, instance business is posted on instance accounts so members can freely block or mute other members)

Ok #neuromatchstodon lets get us a fiscal sponsor and become a quasi-existent legal entity and make our books open. Anyone who wants to help @manisha and me get our opencollective set up hmu

Edit: sry this was intended for neuromatch.social members, we do have (generous!) funding from parent neuromatch org ATM, we are setting up a fiscal sponsor to be a bit more legally independent as well as open up our books and transition to being member supported for eg. Mod stipends and etc. Lemme see if I can make something local only in retrospect 👁️

deploying a patch to fix filtering boosts in the local timeline that's making it so if anyone from another server boosted a post more recently than anyone on our server they are accidentally hidden. should be in like ~15m after backup completes. little notice bc it should be like one second of downtime #neuromatchstodon @techwg

My bad #neuromatchstodon, duplicate boosts filter forgot to check whether a boost comes from our instance or not, so if someone else boosts a post on another instance, the most recent local boost will not be shown in the local TL. fix is on its way, thank u for bearing with us.

if anyone else out there in fediland wants to come play on an instance that welcomes hacking away at masto (glitch) to make it work for smol instances, u are welcome ♥.
