I just returned from a transformational week with the #UCSF #GBHI cohort at the #MAC. Here is a photo of the group after the Salon on Fairness, a wonderful presentation about how we might think about justice in relation to brain health. It was inspiring being among #neurologists, #psychiatrists, and #writers all committed to bringing about a world where brain health is a human right.

I've been listening to lectures and talks from #Neurologists who hold PHDs in their field of study.
I think I need to go get a PHD in #neurology because I understand absolutely everything they say because I studied it for a decade straight trying to figure out my own bullshit.

It's also the face of #dementia. What kind? Perhaps #FTD (frontotemporal dementia) which often presents as apathy and a lack of empathy. Any #neurologists out there care to weigh in?

Many doctors -- #neurologists, #psychiatrists, you name it -- have been concerned about this for a long while. The man is cognitively impaired and has been for years. It's called the prodromal phase, and the #disease has been percolating. Anyone who knows anyone with #dementia knows he is ill. Okay #NYT, now's the time to have your opinion writers say why (or why not) Trump shouldn't be president.

#Trump on his 10-year old cartoon drawing of a woman's body w/a really creepy inscription in it: "I never wrote a picture." He's right, technically, no one writes a picture, you draw one. He's telling a truth but lying @ the same time.
The relation btw. his word-finding difficulties & whatever kind of #dementia he has is something else. I wonder if #neurologists have studied the effects of relentless lying on the #hippocampus. IOW, lying as a cause of dementia.

Last, I am profoundly aware of my lack of expertise in the incredibly complicated area of neurology. If anyone out there (#neurologists?) would like to correct me (especially on my reference to the tau hypothesis), I am all ears and always eager to learn more (and to make sure I'm not spreading misinformation). I should say that maybe the book will go more deeply into the amyloid v. tau hypotheses.

#Media, put 1.19 to 1.21 on blast. It's 2 seconds of #Trump trying to speak. He can't. Anyone who knows anyone with #dementia knows what's happening. Of course he has no idea what he's talking about re: #Gettysburg but that's a somewhat different issue (kind of life not knowing #FrederickDouglass died), although the repetition of words signals, I think, cognitive deterioration. Any #neurologists want to weigh in? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

I am grateful to his sons for making the hard to decision -- an "act of betrayal," as they put -- to publish his last work while he, too, had fallen into that quicksand. It is a gift to the world of readers, to #literary critics, and to #neurologists.

I'm glad #JonathanReiner is speaking up and wish more #doctors would, esp. #neurologists who, though they might wish to avoid a diagnosis, can explain re: Trump's language difficulties. Like the historians of #fascism sounding the alarm re: #Trump, I think doctors have a similar role/obligation.
