The brain processes numbers in different ways, depending on the context. A new study shows that the brain uses two distinct neural systems for number processing: one for symbolic numbers, such as digits and words, and one for non-symbolic numbers, such as dots and sounds. The study also reveals how the brain switches between these systems depending on the task.
