We’ve published new research from the EU co-funded project NGSOTI: “Learning from large-scale IPv4 blackhole: Behavioral analysis of SNMP traffic”.

Over a 12-month period (Nov 2024–Oct 2025), our network telescope captured ~634 million unsolicited SNMP queries from more than 153,000 unique IPv4 sources scanning an unused /18 block.

The origins of the traffic are globally distributed, with notable concentrations from Indonesia, China, the United States, Germany, Chile and others, as well as a few outliers generating unusually high volumes. A significant portion of the scanning activity can also be attributed to infrastructure belonging to commercial threat-intelligence and scanning companies, providing useful context on what constitutes “expected” background noise.

The analysis covers SNMP version usage (v1/v2c overwhelmingly dominant, minimal v3), community-string patterns (default, weak, and undocumented strings), and OIDs that point to which device vendors are most scanned.

This dataset provides insight into real-world reconnaissance trends targeting SNMP-capable infrastructure, helping defenders better understand background noise and scanning behaviours.

I don't do a lot of #NetworkAnalysis in my work, but there are many in @digigeolab who do, and presumably here as well.

I know #NetworkX is a commonly used Python library for such analysis, but it is a bit slow. However, there is a new spin of it called #RustworkX written in Rust, which makes it blisteringly fast.

Has anyone tried it? Any opinions?

Let's sum up my impressions on #networkanalysis tools: #Gephi seems to be the tool for the network in-between and continues to be standard for starting. However, #networkx gives most freedom in modelling, but requires advanced Python skills. If you work in the 1500-1800 period, you should use #Palladio for linking your data with others. If your data is really big, you might go straight to #Cytoscape and if you want to combine with webscraping having too much money you can use #NodeXL. Agree? ;-)

I thought I remembered someone here was working on a library to create and analyse #hypergraphs (potentially in #rust but I'm not sure).

Does anyone know who that might be? I wanted to check the library but I haven't been able to find it (or if I have, I did not recognize it).

Basically, anyone working on a hypergraph library, please ping me 😉

Did you ever hear about Custom Headers in #bravebrowser? Yesterday I found out that #Brave will add custom HTTP header X-Brave-Partner on websites of the Brave's partners.

Currently, it adds this header only on #Grammarly website, the reason is "Count Brave visitors as part of an ad campaign".
Also, if #Yandex is a default search index, the Brave adds special clid parameter to search requests for indicating that request originated from Brave (2423859 for Android users, 2353835 for Desktop users).

In the past, the list contains several Brave partners, such as upholdm you can check the revisions of the wiki page (e.g. in 2019-2020).

Interesting fact is that in the past, this list was updated dynamically - the Brave browser downloaded a json config once a day from https://laptop-updates.brave.com/promo/custom-headers

Despite the custom headers and clid are same for all Brave users, it can be used to identify who uses Brave browser - in some organizations/companies it could be prohibited because of its support for Tor, and this Custom Headers and parameters can distinguish between the Brave users and others

It seems the fedimint software, operated by say 12 local 'guardians' running it as a council, are able to basically produce #bearerTokens, referred to as '#eCash', but to the end user they just see a bitcoin account/amount(?). Everyone in the #federation #mints 'eCash' tokens to themselves or anyone, so without local 'guardians' actively doing #networkAnalysis it may be private(?). Then on top of that the guardians act as a #lightnightNetwork nodes.

Tor, #I2P or nothing!

The more who use #TorBrowser and I2P the better, helping people in oppressed countries disguise their traffic. If everyone is using Tor, and I2P it means people will be able to transact information with the confidence that #NetworkAnalysis is less likely to reveal who said what.

If you are a corner store, invite people to use your #WiFi if they have #Orbot or I2P.
