    Be sure you have the manuals for every piece of equipment you maintain.

    Several years ago I was doing a network evaluation for a public utility at one of their power plants. I asked one of the engineers, “Where’s the manual for this switch?” They didn’t have it, so together we downloaded the manual, checked the OS version, and downloaded the OS manual, too. By the time I left three days later that group of engineers had downloaded about a dozen missing manuals.

    I’ve run into this regularly, most recently yesterday, so it’s worth issuing a general reminder: get the manuals in PDF version for all of your network infrastructure and software.

    Then, the next step is to actually read certain parts of that manual, and do certain things.

    1) Does the device have a configuration file that can be backed up and stored?
    Are there any customizations in the settings that you should know about? It’ll help you with troubleshooting later if you’re aware of things like port forwarding settings, IP address reservations, how to put the device in safe mode, whether or not spanning tree is enabled, and so forth. (BTW, whether or not to enable Spanning Tree Protocol is probably a subject for another post).

    2) Has the default password been changed?
    Also, verify that you can quickly login when there’s a problem. When the system is down is not the right time to discover the 2FA is tied to your predecessor’s mobile phone.

    3) Compare the front panel indicator lights to what the manual says. Is everything okay, or is there a trouble indication that you weren’t aware of?

    4) Is everything up to date, running the current version(s)?
    Sometimes there are two different items to check: software and firmware. Other times there’s just one or the other. The manual(s) will tell you.

    Avoid enabling the web management GUI on the WAN port of firewalls and routers if at all possible. If you must enable it, you can do some things to make it less risky.

    1) Change the admin account username. Don’t use the default “admin” or “administrator” to login.
    2) Use a complex password. Abnormally complex. Really complex.
    3) If possible, change the management port. Don’t use the default 8080.
    4) If possible, enable 2FA. You probably can’t, because these rare situations where you need to access a network appliance via the web interface are almost always either (a) remote locations, or (b) small businesses with less sophisticated networks. They just don’t have the installed resources for 2FA.

    BETTER ALTERNATIVE
    If possible, configure a VPN to the remote site. Then you can connect to the VPN, and from the VPN you can access the network appliance from the LAN side instead of the WAN side.

    BTW, if you have the web GUI enabled on the WAN port of some device right now, enable logging and take a look at it. The number of attempted logins will scare the living daylights out of you. These probes are automated, and the cybercriminals just scan entire IP blocks looking for open management ports. It’s not if, it’s when.

    They’re ready to go! It doesn’t matter what the course is - Internet Safety, Ethical Hacking, Cybersecurity Principles, Network Fundamentals, Server Management – whenever I present courses at a private company, it's always difficult to get them to provide Administrator rights on the users’ laptops. Problem solved! I purchased and prepared twelve laptops for a couple of classes I’m teaching on the East Coast in November and December. Now I can pre-configure the laptops as needed for a specific class and ship them anywhere.
