Until the 19th century #Japanese citizens wore a kimono, fastened by an obi (sash). Small personal items such as purses, pipes or medicine containers were hung from the sash by silk cords. The cord was threaded through a bead, or ojime, then tucked behind the kimono sash and secured with a small ornamental toggle or counterweight called a netsuke.

Until the 19th century #Japanese citizens wore a kimono, fastened by an obi (sash). Small personal items such as purses, pipes or medicine containers were hung from the sash by silk cords. The cord was threaded through a bead, or ojime, then tucked behind the kimono sash and secured with a small ornamental toggle or counterweight called a netsuke.

Netsuke were small toggles traditionally used to secure pouches or small containers to the sash of a kimono, as the garments lacked pockets. The delicate carving of the feathers and the facial expression of the sparrow showcases the artisan's skill in transforming a utilitarian object into an intricate piece of art.
The Fat Sparrow is a symbol often associated with abundance and good fortune.

Been hunting for a little acorn to wear as a necklace for a while and came across this ojime that I couldn't resist. Just arrived and its perfect! I'm a big fan of netsuke and sagemono in general (dangerous things to start collecting!) + acorns are good luck symbols and have a rich mythology of protection, potential, strength and good health. A perfect charm!
