A part of me want the heatwave to last a bit longer until the gov is forced to take immediate action and start moving towards #NetNegative instead of #NetZero. Such a move will leave a lot of oligarchs butthurt, so I guess no.

Air conditioners are just air-air heat pumps running backwards. We have 10 days of cooling need and 180 of heating in the UK. Potential for huge carbon emissions reductions there, if anyone was thinking ahead. Run the aircon off solar and get lower carbon heating all winter. #netzero

Here's an uneasy question. Let's say we get to Net-Zero tomorrow, will the climate go back to how it was? The sad answer is, not in our lifetime, nor in the next millennium. But if we don't get to Net-Zero, things will get worse.

Whatever the failings of Labour in UK (I know many on here are sceptical of Burnham), they're in power for now and need support for green agenda.

We need architecture for passive cooling as well as passive heating; we need to adjust our work and activity patterns in hot weather.
And most of all we need to cut fossil carbon emissions to #ActualZero — #NetZero was always a fraudulent accounting trick.

The net zero economy directly employs more than 300,000 full-time workers, while supporting the jobs of 1.1 million. The sector is worth £100bn to the UK already, and is likely to grow by hundreds of billions more. The rest of the green economy directly employs a further 600,000 with Gov plans to create 400k more jobs.
Oil and gas has direct 275K jobs and 205k in support.

Burnham may well go further down this way; he has already said he has an “open mind” to expanding North Sea drilling. But he is also quite close to Milliband. We shall see!
