A little update on Momma Chickadee - she is still incubating her eggs, keeping them evenly warm and turning them every so often. This morning, she got spooked by a Robin that must have sat on the box, and now we know there are actually seven eggs! The male brings her snackies, so all is well. I have added her to the livestream on my YT channel today, if you want to check on her. #nestwatch

Madame Chickadee has built such a big cozy nest that it is hard to see what is going on in there, but this morning, she revealed at least three, maybe four eggs ☺️ She is not on maternity leave yet, laying an egg per day and covering them with fuzz when she leaves. Once her clutch is complete, she will start incubating, and then it will be more clear how many there are. #nestwatch

And with that, nesting season has officially begun here. It did two days ago, on the exact same date as the last time in '23, April 14. I am super duper happy that they chose this box and hope that everything goes well. This little lady has a lot of work ahead of her with that big box. Things have been a bit slow, I think because of the rain, but I put some dry moss out for her and hopefully the weather improves. We may see baby Chickadees again ❤️ #nestwatch

For over a year we’ve been working with a nonprofit partner to provide and place bluebird boxes at one of their properties. Last week I got our first five installed, and today we went to check on them. 2/5 already have fully built nests. 🥰

Here in the ‘burbs I prefer the “two holer” boxes. It gives the bluebirds a chance to defend themselves and their nests when the house sparrows attack.
If the HOSP setup shop first I plug the far hole, place a small screw, hang the van ert and wait. When a bird plops down the spring slaps the hole closed. Weekends only. It’s illegal to hold native birds if you catch them on accident.

Both bluebird nestboxes have been taken over by invasive house sparrows. I love being a bird landlord, but I hate the “management” of the bad guys. I used to be a live-let-live kinda guy. But they actively compete with the natives which are in steep decline.
Time to find my VanErtTraps…

Yesterday @Jillianmarisa and I installed new bluebird boxes here at #DisOldHouse. We had a lot of fun with bluebirds at the old place, and this place is loads better (I think) for them.
This morning while tending the chickens I spotted a fella already checking out the back one. Squeee!

Ugh, I missed #WrensDay! Well, I can’t wait until next week- We are are hosting a Carolina Wren couple and a few of their eggies 🥰
Carolina wrens are notorious for picking weird/unique nesting spots. And these two are really embracing it. This nest is commingled with an extension cord in a crate on our front porch.

The footage is a bit muddy but here is an update on the House Wren nest. The four babies are one week old and doing very good. The parents feed them constantly, and the female is preening them a lot (there may be mites in the nest). Here you see why two holes can be good for a nestbox - no traffic jams for the parents! It is kind of nice to have a nest this late in the season. #nestwatch

In other nesting news, Wrennifer has now settled and laid three eggs as of this morning. Her guy was hard at work for a whole month until she finally decided to go for it and added her embellishments. I call the House Wrens puppies because they are so obsessed with sticks 😆 I hope the weather remains friendly so that they have a safe brood. #birds #nestwatch

The Bluebird babies hatched on June 12 and 13, and on June 29 and 30, they fledged. The nesting process was pretty flawless with two very dedicated parents and good amounts of insects in the yard. The heat was a bit excessive at times but thankfully not so for the entire nesting. The world has four more Bluebirds in it, who will now learn how to survive in the wild and hopefully return to my yard soon, and maybe they will do another brood.
This video is edited, with some sections sped up. I kind of wanted to show the whole process of fledging. It can take quite a bit, as some of you who followed it on Youtube live have seen. (This is the short video, a longer one is on my other socials and Youtube.)

The babies are back live on my YouTube channel again, and we are kind of on fledge watch now. They will start calling the parents and listen to them answer to gain the courage to make it out of the box and into the world. I hope the stream stays stable. #birds #nestwatch

Momma Bluebird has been guarding her nest and even spent the night last night, and I thought she was done laying but she added another egg to the clutch today. I think she may do a fifth tomorrow because she is not brooding yet. I decided to name them Dougie and Janey 🤓 #nestwatch

It has been a while since I’ve provided an Eastern Bluebird update. The family in our front box has what I’ll call teenagers. Pretty soon they will be grown up. Looks like all five babies survived and are doing well. 🥰

The Northern Mockingbird pair are mostly absent from their nest. I guess the ambient temperature is warm enough that they don’t feel the need to lay on the eggs?

I have had two small neodymium magnets sitting on my desk for... Years. I salvaged them from some tech packaging that used them for a satisfying snap close.
Anyway, today I attached them to the stove pipe baffle below our bird houses. Now I'll have a place to "stick" the nails when doing #NestWatch instead of losing them.
All of this to say, tasteful hording of potentially useful stuff is a good thing! #packrat #hoarder

The BBs were back early today and came visiting all throughout the day too. Here, the male goes in to inspect and the female peeks in. Having a cam in the box made me love them even more, it is so cool to listen to their conversations 💙
