The Wren babies hatched on June 16, and they are doing really well. The parents are constantly feeding them, and I always find it interesting to see what they bring - I see spiders, ticks, moths, ants and larvae - and also what a teeny tiny baby bird can stomach. And result in full diapers instantly, which the parents dutifully remove. It is also funny that all baby birds look alike at this stage. Eyes are open today! #nestwatch
I am livestreaming this camera on my YT channel too.

The Wren babies started hatching last night, and then this cute scene happened. The male came over with a snack, and he would not give it to the female, he wanted to feed them himself. These birds can be tiny tyrants but they are also super adorable at times. I only did minor edits here because it is kind of sweet to see him taking so much time when outside they are the quickest, sneakiest little things. #nestwatch #birds #nature https://youtube.com/shorts/8vQi50mlcLQ?si=6M3brhzJoSowhjpi (I cannot upload videos of a certain size but cannot always cut them down to a minute duration.)

House Wrens build their nests with lots and lots of sticks, which is why I also call them puppies 😆They can fill a space in no time and also make mock nests in surrounding spots to keep territory. They will also peck and toss eggs and tiny nestlings in nearby boxes, which is why Wren guards are good for active nests of others. They are a native bird and adorable, so it is fun to watch them do their thing. She has about 4 eggs so far. (I also added an entrance hole restrictor.) #nestwatch

And a look into the nestboxes right now. A House Wren has started building a nest two days ago in the 2-holed box and is spending the night in the box, and the Chickadee is sitting on her 12 eggs. It is curious that she has not buried the first batch, she has them all spread out and is incubating them all. Crazy but we will see what happens. Nighty! #nestwatch

Another update on the Chickadee nest. Things are a bit unusual in that the female stopped incubating last week and brought in more fluff. I thought maybe she started over, and... She seems to incubate again, and it looks like she is sitting on 12 eggs now, old and new. I will let her be but I hope something good comes out of this. #nestwatch

Well, I discovered where the #Catbirds are nesting -- in the Rhododendron bush in front of the house (I accidentally disturbed the nest and got scolded). When I was inside the house, I peeked at the nest from behind a curtain. No eggs or nestlings yet. But I'll keep my eyes and ears out for baby catbirds, since Catty-Kay and Cat-King-Cole have paired up!

A little update on Momma Chickadee - she is still incubating her eggs, keeping them evenly warm and turning them every so often. This morning, she got spooked by a Robin that must have sat on the box, and now we know there are actually seven eggs! The male brings her snackies, so all is well. I have added her to the livestream on my YT channel today, if you want to check on her. #nestwatch

Madame Chickadee has built such a big cozy nest that it is hard to see what is going on in there, but this morning, she revealed at least three, maybe four eggs ☺️ She is not on maternity leave yet, laying an egg per day and covering them with fuzz when she leaves. Once her clutch is complete, she will start incubating, and then it will be more clear how many there are. #nestwatch

And with that, nesting season has officially begun here. It did two days ago, on the exact same date as the last time in '23, April 14. I am super duper happy that they chose this box and hope that everything goes well. This little lady has a lot of work ahead of her with that big box. Things have been a bit slow, I think because of the rain, but I put some dry moss out for her and hopefully the weather improves. We may see baby Chickadees again ❤️ #nestwatch
