The Nerd Reich: Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy follows the rise of Vice President JD Vance, the former venture capitalist whose "outsider" campaign for Senate was bankrolled by the billionaire co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, Peter Thiel. Durán traces the ideological lineage of the current Trump administration back from Vance to Thiel and the far-right-wing monarchist Curtis Yarvin, whose "right-libertarian" political theory has long made the rounds among Silicon Valley elite. "These guys were never libertarians," says Durán. "Now that they are the government, we see their true face: They're fascists, and they're authoritarians."

It was excellent, a vivid description of the new #fascist ideology being brewed for the past 2 decades in the minds of various #SiliconValley billionaires, starting with #PeterThiel.
A strange mix of bad #scifi and cynical US version of elite secession temptation in the face of looming #climate catastrophe.

[…] I do agree that the public has a negative view of AI (and that this is a big problem), but I don’t think it is primarily caused by me or any other AI leader warning about AI’s risks. I think it is fundamentally a crisis of trust. I think that ordinary people don’t trust companies, governments, or the tech industry and always suspect that we are cooking up some new way to screw them over. The causes of this go back decades and AI is just the latest iteration of it. I don’t think that a glitzy marketing campaign with a positive spin (which some have advocated that Anthropic do) is the way to win back that trust — at this point, saying that AI will cure cancer is more a cliche than it is inspiring, and most people think it is deceptive. The thing that will work is actually curing cancer. I think by far the most accurate criticism of AI companies including Anthropic is that we haven’t yet delivered on our big promises to benefit the world. That is totally on us, and I think it’s the criticism you should be making, instead of all this stuff about messaging and marketing.

This is not the only reason why “people” hate #LLMs and he knows it. Environmental, ethical, political … many other reasons. But I do hope the media will pick up on the “cure cancer” comment and fucking stop with the tedious ai click baiting.

In a review of the book ‘The Nerd Reich: Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy’ by Gil Durán I read about Peter Thiel as a central figure.
I am wondering about Apple. The company did opportunistically try to please the DOFTUS.
But is the top of the organisation also ideologically linked in any way to the men of the Peter Thiel group? Or do they ‘Think Different’?
Would be nice if Apple is the odd one. There are still a lot of other objections remaining - about the manufacturing practices, tax evasion, market dominance - but those could be disconnected.
