#Neptunite is one of a few calcium-free titanium silicates (incl. benitoite). Seems like an obscure fact but:
#Zircon includes titanium in its structure, as a function of temperature; this can be a #geothermometer.
To standardize a microbeam analysis (like laser ablation ICPMS), we need a mineral with a known composition, lots of titanium and silica and no calcium, which has an isotope at mass 48. Neptunite and benitoite are perfect for this.

#MinCup23 #Arsenuranospathite vs #neptunite. Arsenuranospathite has a splendidly bonkers name, but I'm going for neptunite. The neptunite in this specimen in the #Hunterian museum collections, from San Benito, California, has a δ41K potassium isotope ratio of 0.21‰± 0.06. It's probably the only specimen of neptunite on Earth for which the potassium isotope ratio is known 😊 🤓 See https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlelanding/2018/ja/c7ja00257b #Geology #Mineral #Isotopes
