  1. I definitely didn’t expect the dense fog this morning when I woke up at 6 but it was a surreal ride when everything was quiet, the air was damp, trees were dark deep green, and every road you looked down disappeared into the void.

I put on my sunglasses (photochromic…) but within minutes it got covered in condensation.

The humidity was so high that my headband failed to stop my sweat from dripping down.

Neponset River had a thick blanket on it with some boats scattered around next to the marshland near Granite Ave. The reed bed was tall along the trail, adding at least a bit of warmth. I was tempted to stop and take a photo, but I kept on riding.

Soon I arrived in the Blue Hills reservation. Dense forest. Giant houses with stone walls. Quiet streets without anyone. All I could think of was A Quiet Place. I was still cruising along and tried to look into every side street that came my way, but they all disappeared in the dense white fog. Occasionally a car drove by which reminded me of civilization. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to spend more time in there or escape to busier areas. I think I did enjoy the tranquility though.

After a short steep climb I got back on a busy road with commuters in cars taking shortcuts coming on or off the freeway. Sunshine started to penetrate the fog. I looked into the empty fields wondering, the view at the top of the great blue hills should be nice. The climb is 1.4 km and 9-10% average, that I’ve done a million times. Though it was not in today’s plan, I decided to suffer 7 minutes to peek above the fog.

And the view didn’t disappoint. I also got a chance to take a break. My headband was saturated with sweat. After a few minutes I headed down and did another lap around the reservation. Now the fog had fully retreated and it just felt like a great morning, like anything dark had never happened. Interesting.

I took the greenway back home. At some point I saw a deer on the left, which didn’t even notice me approaching. I was surprised - shouldn’t they be super alert animals? Then another one was crossing the trail from the right I was praying “please don’t panic and run into me!” And it didn’t. It still panicked though. Then they hopped together and ran away. I was quick to pull out my phone to take some very blurry photos but I’m quite happy how they look - it shows the dynamic between me and them.

Not an eventful ride but not an average one either.
