One Snowy Egret stands out in a burst of black wings and flying water as a flock of Neotropic Cormorants takes off from Bray's Bayou. 🪶

For a few seconds, the bayou turned into a wall of wings, splashes, and airborne water—with that single white egret right in the middle of it.

Long-Necked Envoy

As I sat outside, gazing at the calm waters of the lake, a bird swooped overhead—swift and silent. I managed to capture a couple of images as it passed. It turned out to be a Neotropic Cormorant, its silhouette etched against the sky like a glyph in motion.

Art of Flight

I captured this image of a neotropic cormorant (Nannopterum brasilianum) while crossing the Calcasieu Ship Channel in Louisiana. The bird was passing the ferry at just the right moment, allowing me to take some quality photographs.

The photographs I share here don’t appear as vivid as they do in my Pixel’s gallery. To make them load more easily, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. Take a look:

I spotted this neotropic cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana. The rippling water and its reflection in the image create a captivating and serene effect that I really enjoy.

Neotropic Cormorant in the Bayou

It can be enjoyable to take an imperfect photograph, isolate the interesting part, and perhaps improve the lighting. That's what I did with this image of a neotropic cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus). In this picture, if you look closely, you'll notice the slightly odd posture of the cormorant's neck and head. The cormorant is just beginning to dive underwater.

On The Move

This neotropic cormorant (Nannopterum brasilianum) was moving fast, in fact, I thought it was about to take flight. But as it turns out in just moved to another spot several meters away.

"A nearly all-black waterbird with a snaky neck, the Neotropic Cormorant occurs in sheltered waters of southern U.S. states, the Caribbean, and Latin America. It is smaller and longer-tailed than other cormorants, but otherwise looks very similar to the Double-crested Cormorant, and the two species often flock together. Unlike its larger cousin, it sometimes plunge-dives for fish from a few feet above the water, almost like a booby, though it dives mostly as it paddles along the water’s surface, catching fish as it darts through the water." - allaboutbirds.org

I have this saying that I've used for years: "You don't know what you don't know, and you only know what you know." Poverty is often like that, I think. People don't know how poor they are when everybody around them is in the same boat, and they've never experienced anything other than their current circumstances, which are, to them, normal. This is especially true for people in small rural towns. Imagine, no jobs, no money, no car to get to a job if you had one, no public transportation the obstacles in your way are formable, sometimes impossible. It's hard to pull yourself up by your bootstraps when you have no boots.

Determination.

I thought that this neotropic cormorant was trying to take off and fly away. But the cormorant just expended a tremendous amount of energy to move about 50 feet then settled down again. Maybe it was just getting some exercise.

Yesterday Charlie caught one of the young squirrels in the backyard. These days there are usually more of those little squirrels in the backyard than I notice. It's just a game to Charlie, chase the squirrel, he has no idea what to do if he catches a squirrel. Usually, he freezes just when he is in a good position to grab a squirrel. This time, he nabbed the little squirrel, picked it up, then dropped it, and the squirrel scurried through the hole under the fence. He's done that with a rabbit as well. Do you think he understands empathy?

I photographed this bird at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana. The refuges is roughly 80 miles (124 Kilometers) South of our home. It's about a 2-3 hour ride because of country roads.

"In Mexico, Neotropic Cormorants reportedly fish cooperatively. The birds form a line across swift-flowing streams and strike the surface with their wings. This scares fish into motion, whereupon the cormorants dive and pursue them." - allaboutbirds.org
