Farmhouse arrest – an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring
In Busy Bee and the Silent Spring all the creatures of Old Oak Meadow are feeling unwell. Something must be making them sick. They discover that the problem is coming from a farm next door to the meadow.
In this final illustration the bad farmer from the farm adjoining Old Oak Meadow has been arrested. This story is written for the 8-12 year old reader but a number of adults have also enjoyed reading it.
Some teachers thought that there is enough in the story to form the basis for a whole curriculum of outdoor and nature learning and all wrapped up in a story, children will love. The thing they liked best is the multitude of topics covered, all which are such important starting points for vital conversations with young people. The book has also been well received with the Scottish Beekeepers Association putting a copy of it along with the first book, Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow, in their Edinburgh library.

The agricultural model in southern #Spain is highly productive, mainly due to the intensive cultivation under plastic. Despite strict pesticide regulation, human exposure to pesticides in the environment has been connected to an increase in diseases such as #CeliacDisease. Certain pesticides have also been associated to the disruption of the intestinal #microbiota, which has been xtied to the development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A case-control study was conducted in Andalusia, south #Spain, to assess the prevalence and risk of IBS related to pesticide exposure. This research found a high prevalence of IBS in #Andalusia between 2000 and 2021 in areas with high pesticide exposure using agronomic criteria. Furthermore, the odds ratio for IBS was significantly higher in the population with high pesticide exposure. "A wide range of environmental pollutants, including heavy metals, insecticides, herbicides, and pesticides, can cause gut dysbiosis (Jin et al., 2015, Lin et al., 2020, Reygner et al., 2016). As suggested in our findings, there is also an increased risk of IBS precisely in pesticide-heavy areas and particularly in women. Previous research have found sexually dimorphic metabolic effect after pesticides exposures (Lukowicz et al., 2018). In this regard, #Roundup®, a glyphosate-based herbicide (#GBH) widely used in Andalusian crops, can increase the #Bacteroidetes group while decreasing the #Lactobacillaceae family in fecal samples of female rats (Lozano et al., 2018). Similarly, chronic glyphosate exposure reduces Corynebacterium, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Lactobacillus in mice following GBH administration (Aitbali et al., 2018). Exposure to fungicides such as imazalil can also alter the composition of the GM after acute and chronic administration. Specifically, in mice, imazalil increases the relative abundance of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria while decreasing the abundance of Bacteroidetes (Jin et al., 2016). Insecticides such as chlorpyrifos, diazinon and aldicarb also disrupt the GM of rats and mice (Aitbali et al., 2018, Gao et al., 2019, Gao et al., 2017, Joly et al., 2013). This modification has been associated with increased intestinal permeability and bacterial translocation in the case of chlorpyrifos (Condette et al., 2014). Diazinon inhibits several SCFA-producing genera in the Lachnospiraceae family, which operate as an energy substrate for colonic epithelial cells, altering energy harvesting in the intestinal epithelium (Gao et al., 2017)."

Et voilà qu’une proposition de loi (= initiative d’un parlementaire) voudrait réautoriser des néonics. Qu’en pense le gouvernement ? on sait pas.
Alors, une lettre ouverte contre ce qui serait un terrible régression à été signée par 1200 médecins et scientifiques. Et elle contient des propositions pour du mieux, au contraire.

Réintroduire des produits « tueurs d’abeilles » interdits, placer le « gendarme » des pesticides sous la houlette des filières agricoles, maintenir l’évaluation des molécules sous la coupe de leurs fabricants, écarter la littérature scientifique de l’analyse des risques… Dans une lettre ouverte rendue publique lundi 5 mai, plus de 1 200 médecins et scientifiques alertent les ministres de l’agriculture, de la santé et de l’environnement sur les failles du système d’homologation de ces produits, qui font de la population des « cobayes », écrivent les signataires.
Parmi eux, plusieurs centaines de médecins, mais aussi de nombreux membres des communautés scientifiques impliquées (toxicologie, écotoxicologie, agronomie, etc.) issus des universités et des organismes de recherche publics (CNRS, Inrae, IRD, Cirad).
Les signataires demandent le renforcement de l’expertise réglementaire et s’opposent aux dispositions de la proposition de loi du sénateur de la Haute-Loire Laurent Duplomb (LR), qui doit être examinée par les députés avant la fin du mois de mai. « Cette proposition de loi contient de nombreuses mesures qui vont renforcer la dépendance des agriculteurs aux pesticides chimiques de synthèse, sans pour autant répondre à leur demande de rémunération juste, dénoncent les signataires. Or, cette dépendance pose déjà d’énormes problèmes de santé humaine et de dégradation de l’environnement. »
Mais il y a d‘autres dispositions carrément WTF dans la PP Duplomp (dans l‘aile, on l’espère). Autre extrait :
Ceux-ci s’en prennent aussi à la proposition de loi Duplomb, qui prévoit notamment la création d’un « conseil d’orientation pour la protection des cultures », composé de représentants des filières agricoles et de l’industrie des pesticides, qui superviserait l’agenda de travail de l’Agence nationale de sécurité sanitaire de l’alimentation, de l’environnement et du travail (Anses). Cela reviendrait, selon les 1 200 chercheurs et médecins signataires, « à une remise en cause de la place de l’expertise à travers un affaiblissement du rôle de l’Anses ». Auditionné à l’Assemblée nationale le 25 mars, le directeur général de l’Anses, Benoît Vallet, avait déclaré qu’une telle mise sous tutelle de l’agence reviendrait à une forme de rupture de contrat. « Pour moi, il n’y aurait plus la possibilité de rester directeur général de l’agence », avait-il précisé.
« La loi Duplomb sacrifie la santé et en premier lieu celle des agriculteurs au profit de l’industrie agrochimique, et constitue une grave remise en cause de l’indépendance de la science, comme on le voit aux Etats-Unis », estime Marc Billaud, chercheur au CNRS, signataire du courrier aux ministres et coauteur – avec le professeur d’hématologie aux Hospices civils de Lyon et à l’université Lyon-I Pierre Sujobert – d’un article dénonçant les manœuvres d’occultation des liens entre pesticides et cancers du sang, dans la prochaine édition de la Revue de biologie médicale.
