@meowski There is, in my mind, an "old #NickFuentes" and a "new #NickFuentes". The old version is a pretty rabid antisemite and white supremacist. The new version is perhaps the version you've seen if you didn't know about him before about a year or two ago, he has changed his rhetoric to now be merely edgy conservative nationalist. I personally think that "new #NickFuentes" is disingenuous considering how consistently he's endorsed #NeoNazism as well as how he continues to praise figures like #Hitler and #Stalin, but I can see people thinking that this is the authentic version of him if that's all they've known. -

That was in 2024. Does anybody imagine this will have improved in 2025, not least given the administration’s assaults on universities and the media?
This is not to say that all is well in Europe. There exists a host of potent concerns, including the state of free speech even in the UK, though Nigel Farage’s comparisons with North Korea are grotesque. Yet anxieties about those “patriotic” parties are also reasonable. Europe, after all, has a history. This tells us with brutal clarity that “patriotic” parties, and indeed nationalism more broadly, can all too easily be roads to ruin. The two world wars taught us that. Thus, by failing to throttle Adolf Hitler’s “right” to free speech, Germany ended up losing 5.5mn soldiers and between 1.1mn and 3mn civilians in the second world war. Worldwide, the losses were 75mn in the two world wars.
Hitler was also one of those “patriots” terrified by what the NSS calls “civilisational erasure”. In May 2025, Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) was designated “rightwing extremist” by the country’s federal office for the protection of the constitution. No doubt, it is not a Nazi party. But it does have neo-Nazis within it. Should Germans who know their history just smile and say, “Why not? Freedom of speech is after all sacred.” It takes cocksure Americans to spout such idiocy. Alas, similar backgrounds and ideas can be seen in other rising European rightwing parties.
Equally foolish is the assault on the EU. Here, too, there are many confusions. Nation states are not natural political features of Europe. They were created, many of them quite recently (just as the US itself was created)."

"Algorithmic social media promotes group polarization on an unprecedented scale. Anti-immigration conservatives are perpetually in conversation with each other, digesting an endless profusion of arguments and evidence that reinforces their nativist worldview.
At the same time, social media rewards the expression of more extreme points of view — both because these attract greater attention and because they help to establish one’s superlative commitment to the cause: If everyone in your online community supports mass deportation, then merely advocating for that policy will do little to draw notice or demonstrate your ideological purity.
Violating taboos that constrain others’ advocacy — such as norms against open racism, antisemitism, or apologetics for ICE brutality — however, are liable to gain one both attention and distinction.
For these reasons, among others, the online right has grown increasingly militant in its nativism.
It is impossible to know Trump or Vance’s motivations with certainty. But it’s hard to believe that their decision to hastily rally to Ross’s cause was in no way informed by the sentiments of their social media feeds.
Likewise, it’s difficult to see why Vance would stick his neck out for a racist Republican group chat if not to cultivate the esteem of his online community.
The Homeland Security and Labor Department social media accounts, meanwhile, are transparently catering to the tastes of the far-right fringe rather than those of the median voter."

Columbia Journalism School faculty have issued a statement warning that press freedom in America is under threat, citing the detention without charges of graduate Mahmoud Khalil, deportation attempts against Palestinian journalist Mosab Abu Toha who reported on Gaza, and the administration's aggressive use of libel lawsuits against media organizations including #CBS, the #Pulitzer committee, and the Des Moines Register.
These actions create a climate of fear for 13 million green card holders and over one million international students who may now self-censor, alongside concerning developments like the Washington Post limiting editorial content and the administration hand-picking journalists for White House access.
The faculty calls for steadfast opposition to the intimidation, harassment, and detention of individuals based on their speech or journalism to protect First Amendment principles essential to democracy.

According to the article, this coordinated effort began shortly after October 7, when an editor who had previously been removed from Wikipedia started emailing others with instructions to modify Gaza war-related pages, including articles about crimes against Israel, human shields, and the 2001 Beit Rima raid in the West Bank. On October 16, one of these editors sent an email—which was reviewed by Bloomberg News—urging colleagues working on Palestine-Israel articles to vote against an article that described the Gaza war as a "genocide" started by Israel. The email explicitly called for the article to be "deleted or merged" while labeling the page's editors as "propagandists" and describing the article itself as "ridiculous."

New York Times[...] "The trouble apparently began when two busloads of #skinheads arrived in #Southall, not far from Heathrow Airport, for a rock concert given by a skinhead group in the Hambrough pub.
"Southall has a large #Indian and #Pakistani population, and the skinheads have provided many recruits for the #whitesupremacist #NationalFront organization.
"Many Britons were shocked today as they watched television, waiting for the start of the men's Wimbledon tennis final, to see film of a pitched battle in the London streets, with fire engines and police vans burning along with buildings.
"The police said they had no evidence that the white youths were members of the National Front, a small extremist group that has been accused of #neonazism but local officials said they were sure that the front was involved.
"'The skinheads were wearing National Front gear, #swastikas everywhere, and National Front written on their jackets,' said a spokesman for the Southall Youth Association. 'They sheltered behind the police barricades and threw stones at the crowd. Instead of arresting them, the police just pushed them back. It's not surprising people started to retaliate."
