  1. In our efforts to contribute to a better Social Media experience for NICU staff, we will be pushing our Mastodon server aka #nicuverse. On our landing page on our big 99nicu forum web site, we now aggregate the latest content from our nicuverse feed. Great to see Prof @gautham in our feed!
    #NeoMastodon FTW!

  2. How to premed before Lucentis treatment, in infants transferred to non-level3-care?

  3. Hi @gautham - great to see you in the #nicuverse and let me know of you need any support! Hope more EBNEO-folks will follow!

    Start by following some accounts, such as @nicupodcast @99nicu @Kaltirkawi @piatkat @Gotped @padkaer @brar @DrVickyPayne @actapaed @fracardo @aprendizdeprematuros
Activity is not high yet but I feel that #NeoMastodon could be one market square we currently miss. And the principal values from doing this ourselves are preferable to the values of alternatives IMHO

  4. Re the paracetamol <> autism paper, senior author Prof Brian Lee was recently interviewed by JAMA, a well-balanced discussion with one of their Deputy Editors.
    Can recommend for the #nicuverse

On a separate note, our original paper has gained some great attention according to its Altimetric scores, almost made it to the top-100-list out of 29M items 🤠
Glad to see a negative study get this attention, #publichealth work in practise

  5. This paper on #furosemide treatment of #preterm infants is a great RCT, but I think there is a common misunderstanding, from reading comments like "Yes, I know furo is not working!".
The RCT was done to look into furosemide safety, not efficacy.
I am also sceptical about furosemide and BPD prevention, would be too good to be true, but we would need a much larger trial to look into that question.

  6. In Finland they do many great things (not just winning the Swedish Eurovision Song Content aka "Mello"). In Turku, they have developed a structured program for working with families in the #NICU, called Close Collaboration with Parents.

Check out this inspiring interview on @99nicu with one of the initiator, Sari Ahlqvist-Björkroth.

And at the end, info about their free (as in free!) conference about the Close Collaboration program!

  7. Interesting register study from Sweden, looking into the more active induction of labour at 41+0 rather than 42+0 (changed strategy a few years back), and showing a 50% relative mortality risk reduction (!) although absolute rates were small in both time periods (deaths were 0.9/1,000 versus 1.7/1,000 born infants).

  9. Today 17 Nov marks #WorldPrematurityDay

At 99nicu, we are committed to contributing to this important cause. Preterm birth remains one of the leading causes of neonatal mortality and long-term health issues. However, with the right care, many of these tiny infants can survive and thrive.

  21. The fortification RCT done here in Sweden is now published, extremely preterm infants was randomised to human milk fortifier or bovine fortifier. The comp outcome of sepsis/NEC/death was 35.7 and 34.5%, respectively, so compl neg trial.

NB: preterm infants are mostly fed with mothers own milk in Sweden, so the lack of efficacy might be context-dependent.

  22. While updating our local RDS guideline and #surfactant treatment, I am looking into the data about the dose increase from 100 to 200mg/kg of poractant. While this higher dose is in the Eu consensus paper fr 2022, it seems the actual data about this is pretty vague and less convincing. Anyone else sharing the same impression about this literature? #NeoMastodon

  23. Petra Um-Bergström, our in-house #BPD expert, co-authored this opinion-piece in Lancet Resp Med.

They ”…describe current understanding of the impact of preterm birth on lung function through the life course, with the aim of putting this emerging health crisis on the radar for the respiratory community.”

In short, they are concerned about a #COPD-like disease burden in adults born extremely preterm.

  24. Maternal #Covid19 vaccination was not associated with increased risks for the offspring. If anything, neonatal morbidity (and mortality!) outcomes were more favourable in the vaccinated group. Important data shared from Canada.

  25. I think phone calls should deserve a renaissance.
With our digital overload (emails + tons of apps), we send things out and await replies, if any.
Despite the immediate feeling, a mail can be like sending a letter with a pidgin!
I have started to call people now. Great experience! Many seem happily surprised and then we sort things out on the spot :)
Instead of running things over multiple mails etc.
Just a reflection about the communication landscape we inhabit.

  26. So, I am doing a full X-it, despite disconnecting from the great #NeoTwitter community there. Which I feel very sorry about. But I just feel my own presence on Tw/X somehow legitimate how that platform is now developing. Have shared the longer version about on the @99nicu web site (link below).
I am looking fw to build a new neonatal feed here :)

  28. @namd4kids thanks for sharing and I fully agree.
Are you aware of former “tweetiatricians” on Masto, is there a #pedimastodon ?
We (ie @99nicu) started the #nicuverse server and have tried to get some #NeoTwitter colleagues to move over to a #neomastodon but few has made the move.
