  1. 🧠 New paper by Aidan J. Horner (2025, Trends in Cognitive Sciences) introduces a 3D neural #StateSpace for #episodic memories. It replaces linear #SystemsConsolidation models with a dynamic framework where #hippocampal, #neocortical, and episodic specificity dimensions evolve independently and non-linearly, allowing memories to shift, reverse, or re-engage hippocampal circuits.

That's why this has been a shift for me in my understanding - I had to stop myself from thinking of #episodic #memory as being like a movie of raw sensory data, and more like a story told via "words" (here the words being the #neocortical representational structures).

This is what the original #CLS model got wrong, IMO (it is what led me astray for so many years!)

Yes, I agree, and this is more what I meant, actually, @charanranganath. 🙂

The specific #neocortical patterns that the #hippocampus can index are like tokens of a type, i.e., they are instances of sensorimotor/cognitive states that, courtesy of the neocortex's representational structures, are part of a model of the world. In other words, they have semantic links! It's not just pure sensation (which is how #episodic memory has often been modelled).
