Why is this still an issue on #Element :))
It's been a thing for mooooonths (or a year?) despite not being an issue before, and I'm not sure if it's to do with Element or #KDE/#Kwallet (or something else entirely i.e. #Flatpak). The last time I had an issue relating to Kwallet was with #VSCode and even that required some weird workaround (IIRC, lying that we're using #GNOME 's keychain or smtg like that).
I've been using #NeoChat but I swear Element's the best #Matrix client and I miss having it.
---
edit: omfg, a workaround was found apparently since I last looked into this a ~year ago. Addingorg.kde.kwalletd6to its 'Session Bus' list (i.e. through #Flatseal) works! I can happily use Element again!!! 🥳

Curioso que el desarrollo de Neo Chat parece mucho más avanzado que el de Kaidan, cuando creo recordar que ambos proyectos salieron más o menos a la vez, pero claro el de Kaidan parece que sea solo una persona el que lo lleva

There's a bug in #KDE 's #Neochat that makes it crash on launch. Workaround was shared here:

#matrix app options on #kde atm kinda sucks. #element is the best, but it's now among a number of apps that don't (properly) support kde wallet/#kwallet so that's a no for a while now, which is a shame cos it's worked fine before. #nheko has been recommended, and it's pretty nice despite some rough edges, but it is honestly not that hard to come across several bugs that make it unusable. kde's own matrix app (forgot the name #neochat) is pretty rough on the edges too, a bit basic looking, but def a lot less buggy than nheko - it has some bugs of its own tho like 'quote' messages not working properly, at least when the quoted/replied message has a photo (it shows a thumbnail of the correct image, but opening it up shows a totally diff pic - for instance). all in all, ur best option is element's web app, but for a chat app u wish to use daily for a lot, it's kinda jank to always be looking for ur browser window/tab. the element app on other platforms like #ios and #macos just works tho so dats a fallback, if u use those.

Why is #Signal the only obvious winner here?
What about #SimpleX, #Matrix, #Conversations/ #XMPP, #Briar, #Threema and others?
Signal is cool, secure and works well. But tbh SimpleX also works well and already has better group moderation
Matrix has native clients outside the official ones, #NeoChat and #FluffyChat work really well!

Switched from #schildichat to #neochat on my computer today.
Honestly the KDE UI looks so good in NeoChat :kdenew:
Sometimes using a native app after using electron app for a while just feels so refreshing lol

I'm going back to the #Element app for using #Matrix. It works well on #macOS, it should work the same on #Linux. #KDE's #Neochat while can be nice in its simplicity, was in the end too janky and unreliable for me with weird UI/UX in various places and also some unexpected crashes from time to time.

Weird #Neochat bug lol - I'm guessing bcos I sent a message to "Person A" at the same time I'm receiving a message from "Person A", the UI is showing the messages sent by me, as if it was sent by "Person A".
#Matrix itself likely knows tho whose message is whose, cos as soon as I leave the room and re-enter, the UI is showing the messages (and their senders) correctly. I've been pretty happy with #Element X as my Matrix client on mobile, but honestly there doesn't seem to be a good one on desktop.
I don't particularly like Neochat (mostly UI/UX) but it sorta does the job, while Element on desktop.. looks decent for the most part except for chat rooms themselves which is what you'll be using 99% of the time. Idk how to describe it other than it looks quite jank and broken. -

NeoChat used to allow me to have each chat in separate window. Very useful when you are chatting to 2 people with 2 different languages (by having different language per window enabled). But apparently they've decided to drop this feature, cuz why not! 😒

I can't answer the first, but for the latter, IRC is still wonderful, but if you want encryption, you might look into XMPP or Matrix, if you haven't tried those.
There are some pretty lightweight matrix servers you can self-host, if you're wanting to, and there are some great lightweight GUI clients like #FluffyChat, #NeoChat, and #Nheko, and at least one really good TUI client, #iamb.
But I honestly feel like #XMPP is the under-utilized option.

I finally decided to get a proper second device to run #postmarketOS on, so I bought a Pixel 3A! Fully mainline and #PlasmaMobile is very fluent on it, it's great!
I'll keep my sim-card in my Android phone for now but I'll use it to browse the fediverse (#Tokodon), watch YouTube (#Plasmatube), browse the web (#Angelfish), chat on Matrix (#Neochat), etc. I'll probably find a ton of bugs, so let's get these reported and fixed!
-
I'm using so many #matrix clients lol
on my phone I'm using #fluffychat
on my laptop I'm using #neochat
on my desktop I'm using #fractal and #chatty
why, why, why does Fractal have no way to receive notifications in the background? I'm stuck using Chatty for notifications and Fractal for actual use
conversely, what's up with images in Chatty? they almost never load from Matrix accounts
-
I've not made the switch to #Plasma6 yet, but I did get the KF6/Qt6 version of #Neochat from #Flathub today, and dang, at least in my first five-ten minutes of using it, it certainly feels alot snappier, and seems to have fixed some of the bugs that were plaguing me with the 23.08.4 release, based on the older KF5/Qt5
Excellent job Neochat devs.
-
Also, #NeoChat looks pretty cool! Esp. since the client doesn't depend on Electron like Element does.
Too bad it seems to have an issue with the app crashing when a chat is opened at the moment. Going to keep an eye on this.
-
I installed latest version of #PostmarketOS (edge) with #KDE plasma. #NeoChat is a nice #Matrix client supporting multiple accounts.
-
So I tried several #matrix clients over the last few months.
I tried #nheko and #neochat - and I like both very much. But they both have stuff that does not work as reliably as I would like it. neochat does not really show me spaces, at least I feel like they are not as discoverable as with nheko for example.
nheko is also really nice, but does not integrate into #kde that good (visually).
I am now back to #element, believe it or not.

Is there a Pixelfed app for Linux? So for Linux cell phones, Linux desktop or Steam Deck? Maybe from KDE like Tokodon for Mastodon or Neochat for Matrix Messenger?
