    As cooler temperatures and intermittent rain showers move into the region, fire crews continue to make steady progress on the 4,000-acre Nelchina Glacier Fire (#226), located south of Eureka Junction. The recent wetting rains have aided suppression efforts, though they’ve also presented new challenges. Slippery vegetation and saturated ground conditions require crews to move cautiously along the fire’s perimeter. At base camp, protecting essential gear such as tents, sleeping bags, and food supplies from moisture remains a priority. Many crews have set up large yellow tarps to shield their equipmentβ€”these also serve as dry spots to grab a hot meal and rest after long shifts.

    Despite the damp conditions, firefighting operations remain active. Two bulldozers have arrived and are now working to construct a contingency fuel break north of Eureka Creek, pushing in from the Glenn Highway on the fire’s west side.

    The air tankers were able to place very long continuous lines of retardant on the active fire edge, reducing the fire activity in those areas and meeting suppression objectives. The air tankers delivered multiple loads of retardant into the evening hours and greatly helped in slowing the spread of the fire to the north. Air tankers will return to the fire today to support resources on the ground.

    Smoke from the Nelchina Fire continues to be visible from the Glenn Highway near mile marker 128 as the fire remains active on the northern and eastern perimeters. The fire has grown to 3,000 acres and continues to move to the east towards the confluence of the Nelchina River and Eureka Creek. Fire managers continue to look for natural barriers and areas for opportunity to slow the fire’s spread, minimizing the impact to the Glenn Highway and structures within the fire area.

    Based on the predicted fire behavior, structure protection will continue to be evaluated and improved on a daily basis as firefighters improve and enhance placement of pumps and hose lays near homes south of Eureka Roadhouse. Fuel reduction with the masticator between mile markers 129 and 132 has been completed and the masticator will be relocated further south on the Glenn Highway to remove additional fuel around structures on state property.

    The Alaska National Guard UH60 Blackhawk helicopters will continue to be a vital tool in the firefighting toolbox as they help slow the spread of the fire to the north. The Alaska National Guard helicopters will utilize their external buckets to carry 750-gallons of water to the fire line and deploy it on hot spots and areas of active flame.

    Today crews will continue to scout the fire area and look for areas of opportunity to slow the spread of the fire while taking advantage of natural waterways and geographic features. Roads and local trails will also be scouted to identify routes in which firefighters may be able to access the fire if the fire activity increase and begins advancing to the west. Masticators have completed a large portion of the fuel break by removing vegetation on the south side of Glenn Highway between mile markers 129 and 133 and will continue working to meet more of their fuel reduction objectives today.

    As daytime temperatures increase, smoke may be visible along the Glenn Highway between mile markers 120 and 140. The public may encounter crews, equipment and fire vehicles as they continue to work along that corridor with establishing structure protection and vegetation removal with the use of the assigned masticator. Individuals traveling on the Glenn Highway are encouraged to slow down and drive with caution in the area to ensure firefighter and public safety.

    Temporary Flight Restriction Implemented Over Nelchina Glacier Fire

    Yesterday, fire activity was reduced as cloud cover blanketed the fire, & humidity rose allowing firefighters the opportunity to make good progress on the 2,525 acre Nelchina Glacier Fire (#226), 4 miles south of Eureka Roadhouse on the Glenn Hwy. Working throughout the day yesterday, crews successfully completed placing structure protection in place around homes on the south side of Glenn Highway, near mile marker 128. Pumps & hoses were placed in the most advantageous locations to structures in order to provide the firefighters on the ground the best opportunity for success in case the fire crosses Eureka Creek & moves towards the north.

    To ensure the safety of aerial firefighting operations & ground personnel, a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) has been established over the Nelchina Glacier Fire. The TFR is necessary to provide a secure airspace for firefighting aircraft & to protect crews working in the area. Unauthorized aircraft, including drones, are strictly prohibited from entering the restricted airspace. Violations of the TFR can endanger lives & may result in civil or criminal penalties. Removing fuel, is one leg of the fire triangle, and a tactic frequently used in firefighting. Masticators will be clearing approximately 4 miles of brush and small deciduous trees on state lands south of the Glenn Highway between mile markers 129 and 133 to provide a fuel break between the fire and structures in the area.

    Smoke will continue to be highly visible to the public as the fire remains active along the northern perimeter.     The 2,525-acre Nelchina Glacier Fire (#226) continues to be highly visible along the Glenn Highway near the Eureka Roadhouse as the fire burns in a northerly direction fueled by black spruce and tundra. Fire crews will continue to place pumps and hose lays near structures in close proximity to the Eureka Roadhouse and residences in the area. Pump and hose placement will allow the firefighters to take an offensive approach to suppressing the fire in the event the fire crosses Eureka Creek and moves northwest towards those structures. At this point, the fire is 3 miles to the southeast of the structures along the Glenn Highway near mile marker 128.

    Aviation assets continue to play a vital role in fire suppression on the fire and are helping in slowing the fire’s advance. Currently there are 2, UH60 Blackhawks from the Alaska National Guard assigned to the incident.     Fire activity on the 750-acre Nelchina Glacier Fire (#226), 4 miles south of Eureka Roadhouse on the Glenn Highway, continues to be active along the northern perimeter and smoke continues to be visible to the public along the Glenn Highway. The fire activity along the southern and eastern sides has been reduced because of the fire’s proximity to the Nelchina River and Eureka Creek drainages and the cooler temperatures and moisture laden fuels associated with those drainages.

    Today, fire crews will begin installing pumps and hose lays around structures that are south of Eureka Roadhouse, between the fire’s northern perimeter and the Glenn Highway. This portion of the fire still continues to be very active during the day. In addition to hose lays around structures, fire managers will also begin directing masticators to remove vegetation north of the fire area that could be impacted if the fire activity increases and begins moving to the north towards the Eureka Roadhouse. A masticator is a type of heavy machinery used in forestry or land clearing. It has a rotating drum with sharp teeth or blades and is used to shred, grind, or β€œmasticate” vegetation which helps reduce wildfire risks by managing fuel loads…
