MLB will be honoring the Negro Leagues and the legendary Willie Mays with a televised game today at America's oldest ballpark, Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Ala. Both teams will be wearing Negro Leagues uniforms — the Cardinals will wear St. Louis Stars kits, while the Giants will wear San Francisco Sea Lions jerseys. On June 17, the day before he died, Mays gave a statement to the San Francisco Chronicle about the game. "My heart will be with all of you who are honoring the Negro League ballplayers, who should always be remembered, including all my teammates on the Black Barons," he said. Ty Cobb was a damned fine hitter, holding several records. This white guy was also a serious racist, back when that was socially acceptable.
MLB had announced that the Negro Leagues of the early 20th century are now considered a major league, and they finally finished reviewing every single surviving box score and have officially integrated the stats. Fellow Hall of Famer Josh Gibson, also known as the “Black Babe Ruth,” just took a few batting titles away from Cobb, despite being dead.
They say Gibson reportedly hit over 800 home runs, which would have made him the new home run king, but many of those came in exhibition games, games against semi-pro teams, and games without surviving box scores, so they can’t be proven and/or counted.
Heck, even Jackie Robinson now has another 15 career hits from his time before joining the Dodgers and breaking the MLB’s color barrier.
Refreshingly, Ty Cobb’s great-grandson (also named Tyrus Cobb), is totally on board with this: "Baseball history is a part of U.S. history, and I think [the] Major Leagues acknowledging and incorporating the Negro Leagues is a huge step in kind of bringing all the parts of baseball history together. And I think it's actually pretty exciting that there's a new statistical batting average leader."

To the surprise of precisely no one, the racists are out in full force to refute the inclusion of #NegroLeagues statistics in the #MLB cannon.
Not shocking to see them doing it, but it's still disappointing, you know? You're right, racists, Babe Ruth did hit 714 HRs. And Ty Cobb did have a career BA of .366. Those are both amazing numbers.
But they never had to hit off a healthy, in-his-prime Satchel Paige either.
