In another major defeat to common sense, the Indian government decides to temporarily restrict the messaging app Telegram.

This was done to prevent exam paper leaks through the platform.

So, the grossly incompetent National Testing Agency, which conducts national-level exams here, once again failed to prevent exam paper leaks. And this year they decided to take their foolishness to the next level by banning a message platform with 150 million local users.

The reasons stated were that Telegram was being used to share the exam papers en masse. And that the lax moderation, mass sharing features make it easy for criminals to reach larger audiences.

Of course, the obvious solution to this is to restrict the platform and not attempt to catch the people involved, right?

Telegram challenged the order in the Delhi High Court and lost. The High Court opined that the Govt was within its legal limits, per section 69 A to block Telegram. Who would’ve though 69 could screw so badly.

Of course, as always happen with these knee-jerk restrictions, VPN usage shoots up in the corresponding areas. Proton VPN’s downloads surged 150% with many others rising 50-80%. VPN apps took the top spot in Play Store and App Store rankings.

And of course again, when the General Manager of Proton VPN tweeted the same news, his X account was withheld in India. 🤦🤦🤦

In another major defeat to common sense, the Indian government decides to temporarily restrict the messaging app Telegram.

This was done to prevent exam paper leaks through the platform.

So, the grossly incompetent National Testing Agency, which conducts national-level exams here, once again failed to prevent exam paper leaks. And this year they decided to take their foolishness to the next level by banning a message platform with 150 million local users.

The reasons stated were that Telegram was being used to share the exam papers en masse. And that the lax moderation, mass sharing features make it easy for criminals to reach larger audiences.

Of course, the obvious solution to this is to restrict the platform and not attempt to catch the people involved, right?

Telegram challenged the order in the Delhi High Court and lost. The High Court opined that the Govt was within its legal limits, per section 69 A to block Telegram. Who would’ve though 69 could screw so badly.

Of course, as always happen with these knee-jerk restrictions, VPN usage shoots up in the corresponding areas. Proton VPN’s downloads surged 150% with many others rising 50-80%. VPN apps took the top spot in Play Store and App Store rankings.

And of course again, when the General Manager of Proton VPN tweeted the same news, his X account was withheld in India. 🤦🤦🤦

This is the unfortunate state we’re living in. I can’t quite say if we’re living in India or China.
