  1. Trying to jump back into Ruby on Rails after a long break, so i'm making a little app. At first i thought of making a web reproduction of my most favorite messenger of all time (PictoChat), but looks like it already exists, so i decided to make a Needy Girl Overdose-themed one (still wanna add a drawing feature there). Here's the layout i guess. Might be sloppy, but i'm not a designer, i made it in cs3 my beloved.

  13. Have you ever thought about being a professional streamer? As a profession, I haven’t. I have thought about streaming something, mostly gameplay without commentary which would net me about -1 viewers. I even acted on it and streamed directly from my xbox but I quickly forgot that I was streaming. Things don’t work without engagement and engagement doesn’t come without a bit of exposition. I wasn’t sure if I’d want to open that door so I kept it tightly closed, no regrets. I’ve watched my fair share of streamers playing games and, as the good lurker I am, I paid attention not only to the gameplay but also to the comments. Needy Streamer Overload (NSO) nails the comments like nothing else. Every comment I’ve read on every in-game stream matches the type of comments I’ve seen online. But there’s much more to it, the empathy, the love, the positive engagement are also featured in those streams. A melting pot of love bombing, toxic hate and fanaticism.

One day I went on Twitch and selected a game I wanted to see. I enjoyed watching streams of games I was very curious about but didn’t plan to play anytime soon. That was the bulk of the few hours I’ve spent on Twitch. I also used to watch Elden Ring streams because I love the game and it’s fun to watch. I remember when I selected the top result of Armored Core VI not long after launch. There were more than 12000 people there and the chat was like a waterfall. The streamer was loud and annoying and didn’t stop talking for a second. What I wondered at the time was why would someone post a comment into that waterfall. Isn’t it the same thing to just think the comment? It’s not like anyone is going to answer or even read it. The streamer didn’t read the chat and focused on killing the tutorial boss and then doing the first mission. But his words had the same effect as that waterfall.

Maybe my idea of communication is very rudimentary to be applied to streaming. If I posted a comment, I’d either expect an answer in return, from the streamer or from another viewer, or I’d expect to add something useful to the discussion. I wouldn’t throw a comment into the ether if it was abundantly clear that nobody would read it. This is part of why streaming is very different from other online interactions, and maybe communication isn’t the main purpose of the whole thing. In NSO the main purpose is to be famous, to make money, to gather followers, to be an internet angel and an idol, to be liked and pampered, and ultimately to be validated. A waterfall chat is the sign that a human has been validated by their community, for better or worse.

A few months after Elden Ring came out, I decided to take a peek and see what all the fuss was about. After watching a few top results I scrolled down with passion and found a streamer that looked likeable and had about 100 viewers. I lurked a bit and noticed that she struggled a bit with the difficulty but was genuine and was having fun. The community seemed supportive and cosy. I decided to stay. I think she was the only streamer that I’ve watched more than once. I eventually participated in the chat and asked questions about the game, because I was still on the fence as to whether I’d buy it or not. There was actual communication, very different from the validated human beings.

Some time later, I got the game myself, I beat it and then noticed that she was still playing the game. She still struggled a lot, and even though we could see the enormous amount of stamina she’d put into those streams, this time she had more followers and was doing a level 1 run. Later, she was playing Sekiro, and after that she died. No, I’m kidding. Isshin the Sword Saint died. For this text, I checked and she’s in good health, playing Final Fantasy XIV and doing cosplay. The Elden Ring thing was only a side quest that took a long time and attracted many new followers. Difficult games attract a lot of people and there’s still people making a living out of Elden Ring and soulslikes in general.

Kangel, the alias of our girlfriend in NSO – her real name being Ame – is a bit more over-the-top. She gets 1000 followers after her first stream and is ready to do her first breakdown stream in a matter of days. The idea is to get 1000000 followers by the end of the month. That in itself isn’t hard to achieve, but as to whether her mental health is intact after everything we inflict upon her to reach that goal is the real question and the challenge behind all the endings we can unlock. The game is a streamer/girlfriend sim and we essentially play as her producer/significant other. There’s very little in the game that isn’t toxic, even our relationship is. We get DMs from her in the noon, dusk and night and if we don’t check or answer, it’s game over.

There are about 26 or 27 endings in the game and, in good tradition, there’s a true hidden ending that unlocks after we get the last good ending. I don’t know much about the process of unlocking the true ending or if we even have to unlock everything before. I did, and I think it was worth the extra time I put into it to see the terrible mental and physical health struggles that Ame went through and to finally unlock an ending that was the best for her. Ame a.k.a. Kangel can transform into many types of person and suffer a variety of conditions derived from her mental breakdowns. From turning into a cult leader to committing suicide on stream, from overdosing on drugs to deep diving into conspiracy theories, from losing her sense of self to missing the sense of reality altogether, and so on. It’s painful to watch but it isn’t something we haven’t watched happening in real life. As a caricature and social critique I think the game is pretty realistic.

Ame’s stats are her followers and then stress, affection, and mental darkness. During noon and dusk we can do a number of activities with Ame like playing video games, having sex, sleeping, taking drugs, watching anime, using social networks and going out. By engaging in these activities she will unlock ideas for new content to stream at night. Everything Ame streams will have an impact on her stats. Overload any of these stats and the game ends but the corresponding ending also unlocks. Some endings unlock if her mental darkness and stress are under 60 or her affection for you is over 80 or vice versa. By balancing these stats with activities that don’t reach too much or too little we’re able to see the outcomes at the end of the 30 day cycle. Tweaking the stats and finding the optimal activities for a given ending is satisfying, but a guide can come in handy for some difficult objectives. It’s possible to reload the game to a given day if Ame throws random events at you.

As an extra, there’s a big collection of CGs to unlock and many endings to keep us engaged. Beyond the focus on toxic relationships, daily internet trolling, depression and other mental health issues the game passes a positive message of overcoming the dehumanising cycle of internet interactions especially when it comes to the abuse female streamers are subjected to. Seen from another angle, the game explores a fantasy of having a streamer in our hands and who bends to our will, subjecting them to whatever comes to mind to explore her limits. It goes both ways, but the message is there. Turn off the internet.
