The medical examiner in El Paso, Texas, has ruled that Geraldo Lunas Campos's death was, in fact, a homicide. Lunas Campos died Jan. 3 at the Camp East Montana site at Fort Bliss in El Paso. He's the one who ICE claimed was trying to commit suicide, so the staff at the facility restrained and ultimately killed him to stop him from killing himself. So even if he did want to commit suicide, that would only mean that he died anyway, but with more pain, less agency, and less dignity.

I'm curious what the consequences will be for the medical examiner, but regardless, I do know that there's no way this administration is going to take action to stop people from dying at disproportionate rates at Camp East Montana unless they're somehow forced to. Maybe the courts can do that, but it's just as likely that they can't or, if they can, that it won't be until after the camp has claimed even more lives.

Nicaraguan immigrant Víctor Manuel Díaz has died in ICE custody at Fort Bill in El Paso, Texas.

ICE says that his death appears to be a suicide. He died at the same facility where Geraldo Lunas Campos also recently died from asphyxiation while held in a chokehold by officers who have said that they were trying to stop him from killing himself.

I don't know what the Department of Homeland Security thinks we're all supposed to make of the excuse that "It's not our fault if people keep dying in our custody because they're choosing to kill themselves." If suicide seems like a better option than living in your gulag, that's still on you.

And again, as a final insult, the ICE report refers to Díaz as an "illegal alien" and fails to spell his name correctly.

I haven't been actively keeping a running tally, but this is at least the third person who has died in ICE custody since the start of the year. That's in addition to the at least two people ICE agents have murdered on the street and various others they've injured, including with gunshot wounds.

The CJPME has a podcast, which I've started listening to once in a while. This episode featured Rana Nazzal, a Palestinian-Canadian artist. She discusses making political art, making art for a specific audience, and the difference between how her art is received in Palestine itself and in Canada. I think she could have talked about how "Canadianized" the reaction to her art in Canada is but she was being constructive rather than bitchy ;) She's currently finishing a documentary on cemeteries of numbers, places where Israel keeps dead Palestinian bodies (sometimes under the excuse of continuing to serve prison terms!) since the Israeli supreme court has allowed the withholding of dead bodies in 2015.
