  2. A quotation from Euripides

MEDEA: Women, my task is fixed: as quickly as I may
To kill my children, and start away from this land,
And not, by wasting time, to suffer my children
To be slain by another hand less kindly to them.
Force every way will have it they must die, and since
This must be so, then I, their mother, shall kill them.
Oh, arm yourself in steel, my heart! Do not hang back
From doing this fearful and necessary wrong.
Oh, come, my hand, poor wretched hand, and take the sword,
Take it, step forward to this bitter starting point,
And do not be a coward, do not think of them,
How sweet they are, and how you are their mother. Just for
This one short day be forgetful of your children,
Afterward weep; for even though you will kill them,
They were very dear — Oh, I am an unhappy woman!
(With a cry she rushes into the house.)

       τὰ δεινὰ κἀναγκαῖα μὴ πράσσειν κακά;

  3. A quotation from Ellis Peters

You do what you must do, and pay for it. So in the end all things are simple.

Ellis Peters (1913-1995) English writer, translator [pseud. of Edith Mary Pargeter]
    Brother Cadfael’s Penance, ch. 16 (1994)

If that comes to pass then the #IranWar would be justified as a War or #Necessity and not of War of Choice. That changes the entire equation. Entire group of countries who have hitherto silently opposed #IranWar and carried out actions which limit #US options will shift into silent support or active help.

That is not the worse part, #Israel might push for a balkanisation of #Iran and have its way.

  7. A quotation from James Howell

    Necessity never made good bargain.

James Howell (c. 1594 - 1666) Welsh historian and writer

  8. A quotation from Oscar Wilde

Sometimes the poor are praised for being thrifty. But to recommend thrift to the poor is both grotesque and insulting. It is like advising a man who is starving to eat less.

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) Irish poet, wit, dramatist
Essay (1891-02), “The Soul of Man Under Socialism,” Fortnightly Review, Vol. 49 (ns)

  10. The #phrase "#capitalism breeds #innovation" had been pissing me off lately. Because the best #innovations have been made from either #necessity or a #desire to make a regular task a little easier or the world a littke better, and several of the best innovations have been suppressed or ignored BECAUSE of capitalism and #greed.

  11. A quotation from William Pitt

It is true, the bill is said to be founded on necessity; but what is this? Is it not necessity, which has always been the plea of every illegal exertion of power, or exercise of oppression? Is not necessity the pretence of every usurpation? Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.

William Pitt (1759-1806) British Prime Minister (1804-06) [William Pitt the Younger]
Speech (1793-11-18), House of Commons, London

  12. A quotation from La Rochefoucauld

He who imagines he can do without the world, deceives himself much; but he who fancies the world cannot do without him, is still more mistaken.

Réflexions ou sentences et maximes morales [Reflections; or Sentences and Moral Maxims], ¶201 (1665-1678) [pub. Donaldson (1783), ¶93]

  14. A quotation from Euripides

MENELAUS:        But so it has to be.
For the saying is not mine, but it was wisely said,
that nothing has more strength than dire necessity.

  15. A quotation from Montaigne

It is dangerous to attack a man whom you have deprived of every means of escape except by fighting, for necessity is a violent schoolmistress.

  16. A quotation from Robert Bolt

YEVGRAF: I told myself it was beneath my dignity to arrest a man for pilfering firewood. But nothing ordered by the Party is beneath the dignity of any man. And the Party was right: one man desperate for a bit of fuel is pathetic; five million people desperate for fuel will destroy a city.
