  7. On National Manufacturing Day, ACB recognizes and thanks the talented and dedicated people who are blind – many of whom are ACB members – providing advanced manufacturing in support of the U.S. government and military through the #AbilityOne Program. From office and cleaning supplies to military uniforms and tactical gear, people who are blind working at National Industries for the Blind (NIB) associated agencies manufacture a wide range of #SKILCRAFT products each day.

  8. UC is celebrating #NDEAM by publishing a photo that doesn't credit the photographer and says "Photographed at the Student Disability Resource Center" so you really have no idea if it was done with informed consent and model release.

That is to illustrate a request by UC that employees fill out a survey to identify if they're disabled.

Not to make our public university the highest common denominator level of accessible by default, not to implement the Demandifesto Action Steps, but "The information we collect helps us ensure that UC locations are accessible and welcoming to persons with disabilities. "

It's very easy to be accessible. Just do it. Highest common denominator and anything above that is done without attacking the disabled employee or student who needs it.

  9. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) in the US. Too bad it isn't Ableism Awareness Month because the problem isn't that disabled people "don't want to work". The problem is that employers have been allowed all along to get away with not having accessible workplaces & actively discriminating.

People think the Americans with Disabilities Act solves this, but ADA leaves it up to individual disabled people to sue. Suing costs $, which the majority of disabled people do not have. The DoJ and DoL should have been enforcing accessibility and anti-ableism in society for at least 34 years now. #NDEAM #Ableism #UCAccessNow dol.gov/agencies/odep/initiati

  10. Even as we celebrate #NDEAM this October, companies are rethinking #WFH policies and failing to recognize the impact on employees with disabilities. @gwitch Chief Information Accessibility Officer at Deque, says this must change. deque.com/blog/work-from-home-

  12. Meaningless platitudes from outgoing UC Berkeley Chancellor Christ, who cares so much about "shared humanity" that she lied to those who wrote to her in 2020 urging her to read & act on the Demandifesto steps. archive.org/details/disability

Even the unsolicited flaccid offer to book UC Access Now to speak during October's #NDEAM (in response to emails sent in JULY) was a lie. #UCAccessNow #HigherEd #NeoliberalHellhole #Ableism

  13. US Dept. of Labor just announced the theme for this year's National Disability Employment Awareness Month. #NDEAM is a bit problematic in itself. While disabled people deserve accessible workplaces, the focus seems to be on our "productivity" and selling us to employers rather than our intrinsic worth as human beings, regardless of "productivity".

Furthermore, US DOL should be working with US DOJ to prosecute every school & workplace that isn't compliant with minimums (much less real accessibility & inclusion). Instead the focus is on feel-good stuff for ableist employers.

  14. Don't take speaker bios at face value.

While Chancellor Christ was one of the few who responded to UC Access Now's campaign to get the Gov, Board of Regents and chancellors to move on the Demandifesto Action Steps, she actually promised performative things like booking us for #NDEAM then didn't even follow up on that.

You can use this event as an opportunity to ask what Chancellor Christ did to move on the Demandifesto Action Steps.

  24. @academicchatter @disability The disabled community in the US should found its own holiday, driven by our own history, culture, and joy, not making a celebration of the barrel scrapings systemic ableism has been legally pressured into doling out. #NDEAM #UCAccessNow #Disability

  27. There are two months where the University of California PR machine suddenly remembers disabled people - July and October. Do you know why that is?

July 26th is the anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and gets celebrated as Disability Pride Month.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (which is actually targeted at abled institutions/employers).

So the PR flacks hunt for feel-good disability stories (sudden photo opps for chancellors with disabled students, etc., interviews with "SuperCrip" success stories) to try to cover up the systemic ableism they practice on a day-to-day basis. Keep that timing & the real story in mind when you see press releases. #UCAccessNow #NDEAM #DisabilityLaw
