📢📝 New UBA report on international #ClimateAction: GST in NDCs - How the first Global Stocktake is reflected in the new NDCs
The Global Stocktake #GST regularly reviews the global effort towards international climate action. In their Nationally Determined Contributions #NDCs countries outline their contribution to this global effort.
In this UBA project, a multi-stage analysis was used to evaluate how #mitigation related outcomes of the first GST have been integrated into the new NDCs.

🔥 on average, the area of forest burnt by fires between 2001 and 2022 was 11 times the size of the 🌳 forests planted by humans during that period.
🔥 global fire carbon emissions are expected to double,
🔥 carbon emissions from forest fires need to be included in national climate plans with a monitoring, reporting and verification system for such emissions.

15/n an important distinction needs to be made here between the commitments so far made by countries (##NationallyDeterminedContributions or #NDCs - more on these below) which are currently estimated to lead to 1.7-2.1°C warming by 2100 (which wouldn’t be too bad) and actual trajectories, fossil fuel licenses given etc. So there are several gaps: between where we need to be, pledges (NDCs), and actual practices
