7. While Cory is discussing a slightly different issue here, I can't help but resonate with the broader point. I've often found the advocacy around "anyone can look at the source code and make changes" in the open-source community to be somewhat misguided.

Mastodon is an open, generative platform, built on software that is free-as-in-freedom — everyone can modify it.

Now, it’s true that “everyone can modify Mastodon” is a statement with a lot of baggage. “Everyone” in this case, is “everyone with the skills to write software” or it’s “everyone with the capital to hire engineers.” That may be everyone, but it’s not anyone.

However, it’s a much larger pool than “all the people with the power to modify Twitter.”

How To Make the Least-Worst Mastodon Threads by Cory Doctorow

There's this notion that open-source is democratic just because the code is out there for all to see. But in reality, "everyone" often means those with the right technical expertise, or at least the resources to engage with it meaningfully. It feels like a noble ideal, but it leaves out so many who don't have the means or skills to participate fully.

A friend of mine who works at AWS (Amazon Web Services) kindly shared a link to an interesting episode of Per My Email. It’s worth a watch for those interested in the evolving dynamics of workplace policies!

In this episode, Kaila and Kyle engage in a thoughtful debate about Amazon’s recent decision to implement a 5-day in-office policy for all employees. They explore whether this move is a smart strategy for the tech giant or if it might be a cover for potential layoffs. I recommend reading the blog post from Amazon CEO Andy Jassy titled "Message from CEO Andy Jassy: Strengthening our culture and teams."

In "Why time management is ruining our lives," Oliver Burkeman argues that modern productivity culture, while promising control, often leads to stress and dissatisfaction. He highlights the irony of striving for efficiency, only to face more tasks and unfulfilled goals. Using the example of Merlin Mann, Burkeman suggests that prioritising work over meaningful life moments can be counterproductive. The relentless pursuit of time management may, in fact, worsen the problems it aims to solve.
