  1. We've planted out thousands of saltmarsh plants this month.
That means we've got space in the poly tunnel to grow more cuttings!
The polytunnel sessions start back in April, there will be a bit of washing pots along side the propagation, as it's better to reuse than recycle.
Small pots for the grasses, medium for the Sea Club Rush.

  10. Lichen on a large stone sitting on saltmarsh on the Eden Estuary
A hare and the sound of shorebirds also accompanied our sampling work today.

  11. The south-easterly winds we’ve been having lately have thrown lots of seaweed up on the saltmarsh grass, emphasising the connection between land and sea.

  12. Saltmarsh in Dornoch last January taken on a sampling trip.
Many textures, from the sharp ice to the brushed (by the sea) grass.
We've got more sampling to do in February, and more planting in March.

  13. Here's a throwback to a very still winter's day at the start of the year.
The Green Shores team have spotted what we assume was a water vole -it was too fast to be sure- hopping into and swimming in these naturally forming salt pans.
Salt pans are a bit like rock pools without the rocks, where water remains when the tide is out.
Restoring saltmarsh provides more habitat for all the saltmarsh creatures.

  14. We've been busy confirming the next saltmarsh restoration planting dates today.
If you are in Fife, near Tayport or St Andrews and like getting muddy while restoring habitat, reducing coastal erosion and creating a carbon store, we have a day out (or more) for you.
Dates and how to sign up to volunteer on our webpage:

  15. It's nice to see saltmarsh in recovery. The fragmented saltmarsh with crevices has new extending saltmarsh in front of it.
This new saltmarsh will take some of the energy out of the waves before they reach the damaged areas and reduce further erosion. The grass at the front is already trapping sediment, increasing in height, storing carbon, and extending habitat.

  17. We've got more sampling planned for January, continuing the ongoing monitoring of the restoration sites.
We won't have the benefit of the University of St Andrews photographer to take photos this month though we love the photos Gayle took when she came out with us and made us look in focus/focussed.

  18. There will be no polytunnel plant propagation session running tomorrow (Wednesday 7th Jan) as it is too cold for volunteers and plants alike.
We should be back next week!

  19. The last few poly tunnel volunteering sessions have been listed on our website including the one with mince pies, the team Christmas lunch has been booked. It's definitely getting to the end of the year.
Meantime, on the saltmarsh, the plants keep growing, or are in dormancy waiting for better conditions to grow again. The fencing should protect this year's plantings from some of the effects of the winter storms.

  20. Lovely to spend some time with some of the artists from the Reciprocity/Poiesis project, talking saltmarsh, grasses, plant awareness disparity, connections and plotting a visit to a saltmarsh.
Thanks to Kate Downie for hosting in her beautiful studio.

  21. Green Shores was featured on BBC Radio Scotland's Out Of Doors programme this weekend. Presenter Mark Stephens came along to our Saltmarsh Stock up in September to meet us and the volunteers who joined us on the day.

You can listen to the recording here:

  22. It was great to lead a walk and talk today with the Scottish Wildlife Trust, Fife and Kinross group.

We covered successful saltmarsh restoration sites, new techniques for protecting restoration planting and saw what healthy and eroded saltmarsh looks like. There was even time to visit the Green Shores plant hub where we propagate saltmarsh plants for the next round of restoration planting.

  23. One of the less glamorous* jobs we do to help restore saltmarsh is wash the minimal plastic polypots we use to grow the cuttings on.
There were plenty to wash after planting nearly 4000 plants earlier in the year.
After washing we can reuse them for the next set of cuttings.

*yes, planting saltmarsh in the mud is glamorous- for a certain value of glamor

  24. Great work from the Green Shores volunteers today, joining the West Sands Rangers for a litter pick along some of the Eden Estuary saltmarsh.

  25. Another field day with a beautiful blue sky.
Spotted this lichen crusted post that has seen a lot of weather on the Eden saltmarsh.

  26. Before and After.
6 months after planting this tidal reservoir site in March the plugs we planted are really doing well and have even started developing their own seeds.
The Sea Club Rush (Bolboschoenus maritimus) and Reeds (Phragmites australis) roots have established well. Hopefully the winter weather will be kind to them and their roots will be nicely established.

  27. This is what we love to see, taken on the Dornoch firth this summer, the previously eroded saltmarsh edge is recovering and extending seaward.
Saltmarsh is very effective at protecting against coastal erosion when it is healthy and of a sufficient size to buffer the energy of the incoming waves.

  28. Volunteers have been hard at work in the polytunnel, propagating plants for saltmarsh restoration.
There will more opportunities to volunteer with Green Shores; saltmarsh restoration planting dates will be released soon for the Tay and Eden Estuaries

  34. Then and Now. Trays of newly potted on grasses in (first picture)July and in the second picture in September this year.
These are plants which will go on to be planted out as part of our saltmarsh restoration project.

  35. Tide coming in and tide out at one of our saltmarsh restoration sites on the Eden.

The Saltmarsh plants are adapted to this twice daily tidal influx.
The recent planting are establishing and still hard to see against the sand behind the fences, they are fully submerged as the tide comes in.

  36. We were planting last week, getting the last of this year's polytunnel grown stock out into the Eden Estuary- Sea Club rush and saltmarsh grass.
Another two days with fabulous volunteers, we couldn't do it without them.

  38. More saltmarsh harvesting today for our work with the University of St Andrews Transition group. Tomorrow we’ll be planting up the reservoir we started restoration planting last year.
    Sunny, muddy fun.

  39. The Dornoch Academy students were helping propagate saltmarsh plants for saltmarsh restoration in the Dornoch Firth the other week.
Great to have them helping bulk up the plants.

  42. The saltmarsh walk went well today. The participants saw the new fencing in place on the seaward side of the saltmarsh that is taking some of the energy out of the waves, protecting the damaged saltmarsh. Next year’s plantings will also be protected while they establish, & once established those plants will go on to shelter the saltmarsh further, allowing it to extend more.

  43. The Green Shores #FifeClimateFestival events continue next week with an open volunteering session at the polytunnel just outside of St Andrews to divide plants to get them ready for planting out at our saltmarsh restoration sites on the Tay and Eden Estuaries.

  45. Another image from last week's drone survey outings to some of the saltmarsh restoration sites to get baseline data. We will use it to see the change in saltmarsh extent by the end of the current funding cycle.
The edge of the estuary can be a harsh habitat. This moss is growing on rock armour at the estuary edge. The drone pilot, Ken, is visible in the background.

  46. A good day at the polytunnel today, we tipped over 100 hours of volunteering time and have potted on over 1,250 saltmarsh grass plants- all since July.
We haven't counted how many of the Bolboschoenus maritimus plants have been potted on yet.
No wonder we keep needing to source new containers to keep the plants in, thankfully, Transition University of St Andrews have been great at supplying us boxes from their StAndReUse scheme.
    #volunteers #NatureRestorationFund #SaltmarshRestoration #ReUse

  47. This Sea Club Rush (Bolboschoenus maritimus) grew new shoots out of it's pot and into the container it was sitting in. Turning it upside down, it's clear that the roots form a dense mat, stabilising the soil it is growing in.
No wonder it is a superstar plant for catching sediment and building saltmarsh, all that and it can survive salty water and waterlogging.
