  1. Nature hitting copy-paste on the ocean horizon 🌊☁️

It looks like a colossal tsunami rolling in over Portugal, but this rare phenomenon is actually a roll cloud (volutus). They form completely detached from other storm clouds, literally tumbling horizontally through the sky on a wave of air.

    Terrifying or mesmerizing?

  2. I came across a dead fox in my yard the other day. It may have been killed by a coyote; I've seen one hanging around. I first noticed it because a cloud of black butterflies was fluttering over a spot in the high grass. They were puddling, looking for salts or fluids from carrion. There's some folklore associating black butterflies with death, the departure of the soul, or spiritual transition. buzzle.com/philosophy-religion #natureismetal

  3. Last night I went to Investigate a loud noise that seemed to be coming from outside. I flicked on the porch lights and was met with this violent spectacle. They were hissing but the camera didn't pick up the noise very well with the door closed, so I opened it. It's more clearly audible in the last clip but still not nearly as loud as it was irl.

  4. The high stakes of life at the rookery. While roseate spoonbill 🪶 and snowy egret chicks grow up in their treetop nests, an alligator patrols the waters directly below.

  5. We spent some time at the Myakka River yesterday. It was an extremely gorgeous day, but we noticed a bunch of buzzards congregating on the opposite river bank. Where there are buzzards, there is death. I looked around and noticed dead fish scattered along the bank. Fearing some environmental disaster, I asked a guy with a boat why all the dead fish and he replied that it was probably the recent cold snap. #Florida #nature #NatureIsMetal

  6. #NatureIsMetal-osastolta: herhiläisenpistot eivät paljon nälkäisiä sammakoita hetkauta.

"Moreover, he also reports that 93%, 87%, and 79% of frogs ultimately consumed V. simillima, V. analis, and V. mandarinia, respectively, despite being stung into the mouth or even into the eyes."

  8. Skeleton of a Reticulated Python, with angled light picking out the bones. The Natural History Museum in Tring is one of my places on darkening afternoons. The gothic filigree of the snake’s ribs in the shadows of the cabinet always makes me pause.

  10. It is horny season again! ♥️

These two #roebucks 🦌 are at it again every evening, fighting for the trophy you can see in the background.

They are relentless, I can tell you. It is so amazing watching this basically in front of our house. They were like 20m away from me.

  11. It's been quite the week for our resident Goldfinch family.

One chick met an unfortunate end after crashing into a window.
Yesterday, we watched one get taken by a Sparrowhawk right in front of us in our tree.

We see one chick left ... godspeed, little one.

  12. Fun fact: a herd of fennec foxes can take down a fully-grown rhinoceros. They often take down prey much larger than they are by using this method, and nibble the prey down to bones in minutes.

  13. A green lacewing larva (f. Chrysopidae) eating an aphid in Central Park in late May. Lacewing larva are a bit terrifying, but the adults are nearly harmless.

  14. Wool Sower Wasp Galls
    White Oak

A tiny wasp stings the stem and deposits eggs. The eggs command the tree to grow a specific structure that encases and protects the larvae. Inside the gall the larvae look like seeds packed side by side with fuzzy tails. The cycle takes two years to complete. Though strangely parasitic, it doesn’t hurt the trees.

Another wasp evolved an ovipositor to sting the larvae within the gall and deposit eggs on THEM. Parasites have parasites.

  15. In #Aruba on #vacation and these iguanas stole pizza off of a table and began eating it.

Totally nuts! they have no fear of humans.
